Were Adelaide going to sign Neeld?

Neeld is waaaaay overrated IMO. Watching him at the press conference he looked scared. Bad move Melbourne. I hope the Crows get Burns. I have a feeling they are waiting for the finals to finish to announce it so Burns can keep coaching WCE.

I'm surprised Melbourne didn't go with an experienced coach.

Great move by Melbourne, Neeld has been tutored by the best in the business.
Apparantly Neeld is still great mates with Malthouse and it was rumoured today that Mick would be taking up the Director of coaching position at Melbourne next year. Massive bonus for the Dees if this comes to fruition

I agree Punky, I'm surprised Melbourne didn't go with someone who has runs on the board. Two rookie senior coaches in a row. Interesting times for Dees fans.

They probably wanted Lyon but didn't have the coin. Neeld will cut the mustard IMO. Not too sure about the post above just becuase Neeld looked apprehensive at his first press conference. Who wouldn't? Give the guy a chance.

When has a relatively untried senior coach succeeded with a developing side?

Established sides like Geelong (Chris Scott) and to a lesser extent Sydney (Longmire) and Essendon (Hird) have relatively succeeded.

Look at what has happened to all the developing sides:

Primus (Port)
Brad Scott (NM)
Harvey (Freo)
Voss (Bris)

Think you might be a bit harsh on Harvey and perhaps Brad Scott (time will tell) but I get your point. It'd be more than 50% in the 'against' column.

Primus and Brad Scott have had one season, you simply can't judge them on that. Give them two more years at least.

Harvey, were Freo a developing side or did he clean them out and start again? From memory he had the Bell, Haselby names for a year or two.

Voss is about the only one you can claim, with any backing, to have not done as well as expected with a young list.

I think the stats on coaches with previous senior experience with a "developing" side would be similar to the inexperienced coaches

If not the same

Every coach would love to land a plumb job with a gun list at the right time. Unfortunately most times the incumbent stays while the sun is shining and so he should.

In theory all lists are developing to different degrees.

Brad Scott has had 2 years, both 9th's - great platform for the next few years without the team having to bottom out.

of all the premiership coaches from 2004 - 2009 (only mick malthouse has been a proven coach since ) were at their first team - williams in 2004, roos in 2005, worsfold in 2006, thompson, 2007/9,clarkson 2008

mark neeld will do very well

Arguably North have underachieved this year. Are Essendon a better side than North? I would suggest not. I reckon North missed the finals on the back of a couple of ten minute periods of poor football in close contests against teams who made the bottom half of the top eight (the match against Carlton in particular comes to mind).

There is nothing more dangerous than resting on non existent laurels while your club is missing out on decent draft picks. North have an early noughties Geelong look about them but this group has to start making finals soon.

I think if the Crows had finished 9th for 2 years under Craig Dutchy would have called it a "mediocre" record

When it is NM it is a "great platform for future success"

When it is Richmond year on year it becomes a YouTube song

I tend to agree with REB - I think NM could and should have made finals this year so there is no point spinning up a 9th ranked finish IMO. You should be disappointed not to make finals if you are that close. I am sure Brad Scott is.

Finishing 9th twice is no platform for success. Look at Richmond!

Ill take 9th any year instead of "rebuilding" like many teams and finishing in the bottom 4, the list has had a massive regeneration without bottoming out. Finals would have been great but it didnt happen and Scott is dirty on them.

Ill be very very disappointed if we are not top 6 in 2012, there are quite a few wobbly teams that made the 8 this year that Id expect us to pass next year.

That being said we are still a very young side, esp with Rawlings moving on.

Not taking betting tips from anyone who said Burns was a lock.
It's all the SANFL's fault.
