Can you have too much courage?

Jonathon Brown was again pole-axed on the weekend charging back into an oncoming back to take a grab.
He suffered facial fractures and will be out for the rest of the season.
Courage is something Browny is noted for, but where is the line between courage and insanity?

The following scenarios could have played out yesterday:

1) Kick comes in, Brown chases ball back with flight, tries to mark it, gets smashed by the oncoming pack of players and is out for the season, or

2) Kick comes in, Brown chases ball back, but waits for contest from pack and decides to crumb instead, plays rest of game, plays rest of season etc etc.

Yeah, Brown is the epitome of courage but what was yesterday's act of courageousness in aid of?

What's your thoughts?

A truly fearless competitor.
Not going to play much footy if he doesn't stop doing it though!

That's it! Is his courage destroying his career?

Well, it's destroying his face.

i would certainly want a bloke with too much courage....you can tone that down somewhat...the bloke without courage well you wont change him....and theres a few around in the comp thats for sure.

I would be concerned about the fact he could clean up another important forward.

Johno Brown is the Man and is respected by so many for these type of acts eg going back with the flight, remember a few years back when he and Nick Reiwolt both took markes running back with the flight and if my memory serves me correctly Nicks was mark of the year and both players were praised like crazy for there commitment, now because he has been hurt hes stupid. we cant have it both ways, obviously we dont want to see players getting hurt like what happened to brown on the weekend but how i enjoy watching him play and his presence around the ground including going back with the flight its not for everyone to do it but thats what makes him the player he is

Don't get me wrong, love the way he plays etc but I just think the reward for what he was attempting on the weekend was far outweighed by the potential consequences.
So his team will play the rest of the year without their inspirational leader for what? A possible goal against the Cats in what was effectively a dead rubber?

Yeah, dunno, the game was close, two league leaders, Toovey isn't a captain, and he stopped a possible shot on goal.
But yeah, I guess the point I'm trying to make is the line between courage and stupid isn't always clear.

The thought did cross my mind. Very selfish of Brown. I guess he has gotten away with so many of those types of marks over the years, his luck was bound to run out.

Clark should be sighted by the MRP as well.

Selfish, I don't think so, but his attack on the footy was reckless to the point he put himself out of the game and the season.

That's Jonathon Brown all over...puts his body on the line for his team week in, week out.
As a Lions supporter it hurts to have him out of the side, but I would never want him to change the way he plays.
He'd be the first player pick in my side.

If he had pulled out of the contest, can guarantee there would be a section of the footy community criticising him for doing that also. One of the bravest, most courageous players in the game today.

If he takes the mark and kicks the goal it probably inspires his team to grind out the win. The captain leads by example and to have one that plays a fearless brand of football is invaluable to a team. Not without it's pitfalls, but IMO the impressionable good outweighs the bad improbable consequences.

Agree Quichey, especially in a young side that has been ordinary he would have felt it was his duty to inspire them by example.

Not at all. Sometimes it pays off sensationally like when he took the Mark of The Year in 2002 against Hawthorn running back with the flight of the ball. Jade Rawlings will remember it well!

Brown was deadset unlucky against Freo in round 1. It way have been an accident on Luke McPharlin's part but it was still clumsy as he was nowhere near the contest and should have made more effort to veer out of Brown's way when he was on the ground.
