All-time Woodville best 21

Postby Hondo » Tue Mar 20, 2007 2:26 pm

All these nostalgic posts about the Woodville FC have got me wondering if there was ever an official (or unoffical) all-time Woodville best 21 named ..... criteria simply being anyone that played at the club. Would be a stronger team than most would expect I reckon. Anyone want to have a go .....?

This was discussed at length in another forum. I won't steal anyone's thunder, I'll stand back and let McAlmanc have a go :) And yes, it is a very good side.

My original "off the top of my head" side from that thread:

FF: K Harris, S Nichols, B Close
HF: J Cummins, A Taylor, R Sewer
C: P Maylin, R Simunsen, R Allen
HB: F Stemper, A Rogers, C McDonald
FB: L Heaven, M Parker, F Hansch

1R: C McKellar, M Blight, R Huppatz
2R: F Hansch, K Harris, B Close

Int: E Holland, N Teasdale, I Dettmann, B Tyrell

I reckon Holland and Teasdale could replace Heaven and Hansch.

Craig McKellar was a State regular from the age of 19 before moving to Victoria. That entire first ruck all eventually played for the Big V.

No Champion, Klug, Lunn or Jakovich in that side. I guess 3 of those guys would have made it if not for the fact they only played 2 or 3 years for the club before joining the AFL.

1982 - the last year of the Peckers.

Pierson kicked 104 goals in a 1 win season. Particularly impressive were hauls of 7 (against West, loss by 90), 5 (Port, by 116), 8 (North, by 48 ) and 6 (West, by 70).

But that 11 goal day against West Torrens at Thebarton in Round 19 was special. If only for the fact that Paul Harradine was in the best players!

And surprisingly so, given Peter Schwarz had played over 150 games at the time. Probably an indication of the regard Negri was held in as a bloke - he was a very popular figure around the club.

Piero played well that year , then got sacked by blighty in 1983 ( one of ten )
