It would appear that there is still a chance he could be coaching another Victorian club next year.


Now I'm just putting it out there - Is his agreed deal with Collingwood possibly similar to what would happen in the private sector where if you agreed to a deal with a firm and then halfway through that deal you are offered a better deal by another firm that you would generally be allowed to do if it's in the better interests of your career i.e. surely the senior coaching position at another club is better for your career than an inferior role at Collingwood.

Could it also be possible that if this occurs that Dale Thomas could sign a deal at GWS (that was less than a million dollars a year) prior to the trade period and is then traded during trade week to the club that Malthouse ends up coaching?

In the slight chance Mick does coach another Vic based side, it would only be out of the Bulldogs (if they fail to make the finals) and Melbourne (if they fail to make the finals). There is always a very small chance he could go to Richmond if the Tigers only won 1 more game for the year say.

well i certainly hope he is with us next year as footy director,yes as in mark thompsons role...not sure about him being in the box though. I would like to hear from nathan buckley what he thinks mick's role should be because i feel thats where the sticking point of the deal is...maybe buck's isnt happy with micks job discription????

I can't believe a clause of some sort wasn't put in place to protect Mick as coach should they have success.
Eddie i believe has egg on his face at present with all this.
Carolyn Wilson should shut her trap aswell, who the bloody hell does she think she is slagging Malthouse?
I wish all the media would focus on this year rather than next, this Collingwood coaching saga has gone on far too long, the media like to stir the pot & create a storm, its an absolute joke how long this has gone on for.

Which is strange isn't it given that Buckley isn't a proven senior coach and the record of coaches going straight to the club they played for without experience elsewhere isn't that good in recent times.

Malthouse is now claiming that he definitely won't be coaching elsewhere next year so if that's true, I'm happy to leave it alone.

I reckon he was gunning it BEFORE they even won the flag last year. Have a look at how Collingwood handled the generational change in comparision to say, Adelaide.

Adelaide - play the old guys until they fall apart bring all the kids through at once. Have a look at the ladder.

Collingwood - piss of O'Bree, Licuria, Burns, Presti, Rocca and Medhurst and play guys like Sidebottom, Beams, Blair, Dawes, McCaffer and Brown (Nathan variety). Have a look at the ladder.

Collingwood have youth AND experience on side. Players at Collingwood know that there is no gold pass at the Lexus centre. St Kilda, Geelong and Bullies have the experience but don't have players in that younger bracket that Collingwood have. Other teams have a younger group but don't have the experience in the finals to back it up.

Also, check out Malthouse's record earlier in the decade. No way were they better than Port during the period that they made two grand finals. He's also done well with the Eagles (well, not too difficult that one with the sweet deal they got) but more signifcantly the Bulldogs as well.

Malthouse love doesn't come from just last year.

I agree with that REB, also think the juggernaut came from his style, system and philosophy moreso than just having a massive leg up in list talent (not under-rating it either, but they achieved a lot with players that werent household names).

Not to mention player development.

The turn around in them in just the 2 years between 99' and 2001 was pretty big too, and Mick presided over that also.

He is a super coach and to my mind at least will have to be remembered as one of the greatest in my time (from say 1980 onward)

With the gifts the Eagles were given with recruiting I dont think Malthouse was the genius ( back then ) that he is today. What a side he was gifted to work with. Fozzie bear might have got a flag out of that group and recently I think Worsfold said something along the lines of "....should have won more"

mick set the ground rules early in his stint and eddie delivered. has built a very impressive list since day 1 and to be honest we were fortunate to play in grand finals against brisbane...everyone at collingwood witnessed the lions juggernaut first hand and from then on that was the standard and no one at the club has taken any short measures.

apart from some off field issues having distracted the club in a small way, everyone has pulled in the same direction...NO EGO's.

Great talent identification helps of course, and luck with injuries, and theres your template for success..Oh and having some cash helps.
