Rule change - Allow the throw

Postby overloaded » Thu Jul 14, 2011 12:36 pm

Just a thought but how would our great game go if we allowed players to throw the ball.
I know this must sound outrageous but would it have that much of an impact on the game? Maybe you could make it you can only throw backwards?

Image the game with being able to throw, maybe under arm (rugby) throw only allowed. (no gridiron passes)

Interested in your thoughts?

Just change the "throw" rule when someone is tackled - ball jarred free, and they hit it so that it's NOT a throw and I'll be happy.

the only thing you should be allowed to throw is the umpire when he gets it wrong.

The only thing we should throw is the bloody rules committee. Amendments of rules should only be discussed at a conference to be held every three or four years. Annual rule changes lead to poor umpiring and confusion for players. They only do it to justify their existence so bye bye KB and other butchers of the game.

How about some consistencies with rules, ie:

Standing up with ball and tackled - Ball doesn't get released but player made an attempt = Ball up!

Player on ground with ball and tackled - Ball doesn't get released but player made an attempt - Holding The Ball!

Anyone else see an inconsistency?

Let's not even get started on incorrect disposal .. That went out the window ages ago and was one of the core fabric components of the game (IMHO)

I think the grey area is what is incorrect disposal and what is the ball coming out from the tackle.

You've all missed the point. They already allow you to throw it!!

How often does a bloke get pinned by one arm, either drops the ball trying to get a kick away "play on" or when on the ground simply "pushes" it out while still pinned "play on", THATS A THROW!! All too often I see players just shovelling the ball out of a pack to a team mate but because the umpires are telling him to "release it" they are happy to see the ball come out in any way possible.

The 2011 version of holding the ball, incorrect disposal etc is the worst it has been in the history of the game.

Shoveling on the ground? That's ok, it's not a throw. A throw must travel in the air.
The AFL is their own worst enemy with the other stuff you described with the mantra that you HAVE TO GET THE BALL OUT, so players figure, well - let me!

What REALLY annoys me, is when the ball is on the ground, players on/around it and it's going to be a ball up because of no prior etc, but the ump STILL says knock it out, knock it out which really, is like under 8s encouragement. Why bother if it doesn't affect a decision.

All the umps want is to keep the ball moving, the rules went out the window in about April.

Agree, a throw must travel in the air, but when you have been tackled with possesion of the ball and taken to ground to simply push the ball out along the turf, IMO, is incorrect disposal, a throw if you will. This is allowed and shouldn't be IMO.

In this instance they give a plyer the "benefit of doubt" and allow him to get it out. Irks me greatly.

Ronnie Burns is spewing. He wants to make a comeback as a two sided player. Simon Black however, is going to replace Darren Lockyear in next year's Origin series.

The AFL has lost sight of the fact of the core fabric, I agree.

1. Players should be encouraged, not discouraged, in going for the ball and taking possession.

2. Ball ups are part of the game.

3. Holding the ball is a reward, not a punishment

4. A good tackle that does NOT result in a free kick IS STILL A REWARD FOR THE TEAM AS IT STOPPED THE OPPOSITION.

It seems these days that the AFL thinks they need to manufacture flow in the game. Umpires seem to have the mentality of "there's a free kick here unless they prove to me otherwise" rather than looking at it objectively.

The number of free kicks given these days when the player who gets the kick does NOT deserve it is horrible. Sure the free is there because the rules say it is, but it's the rules that really annoy me. In a game based heavily around the value of possession (more than basketball and soccer), the fact it can change with tippy-touch frees really cause angst.
