Why are Port waiting until the redevelopment to move? Do they expect more than 40k?

Sanfl wont let them move they have too much money invested in AAMI to allow port to go. Sponsors of AAMI have paid for 22 games.

PORT Adelaide's off-field crisis has taken a turn for the worse with the possibility of the Adelaide Oval redevelopment being shelved.

The Age understands that the Sky City Casino group, a key investor in the development of the precinct, is about to announce from its Auckland headquarters it has scrapped plans to expand the Adelaide Casino to the bank of the River Torrens.

This upgrade, and a proposed bridge to Adelaide Oval, is a major part of the complete package, and without it the Mike Rann state government faces an even more daunting task to pass legislation on the $535 million project.

Pure speculation it seems:

I've heard via the grapevine that the redevelopment is about 300 mill short in funding, PRIOR to this development.

I personally would love to see Adelaide Oval completed ASAP. its just down the road, BUT I can't see the value for money to the tax payer. And lets not kid ourselves, this is not Sydney with a population of 4.5 mil or Melbourne with 3.5mill.The return on investment is just not there. Money is tight and investors want value for investment, EXCEPT the SA government. The $540 mill for the Oval upgrade is an improbable outcome.Love to be proved wrong.
PS no-one is going to "walk down from there office after work" on Sunday morning to see a game of AFL at 12:40

Welcome Agile

I agree. What I hear is "it'll be great, we can just walk down after work on a Friday night....". How many Fri night games does Adelaide get a season? How many will we get in future? How many people will walk down on a Friday night as opposed to going home and watching it live on Foxtel? Lots of questions but I'm not hearing sustainable answers.

As for Sat and Sunday games well I just don't know.

Get into the cricket Forum gentlemen and several SACA members raised several valid points and got nothing answers. I fear the Horse has bolted now and unfortunately this State will have to live with the legacy of youthful SACA members who were blinded by the almighty dollar and didn't stop to ask the hard questions....

Guys, town is open Sat PM, Sat night, Sun PM and Sun night too!

Or do people only go into the CBD on a Friday night?

Arguably day games are better for the CBD traders

Agile, a 12.40 game? How about a bevvie or a coffee in Rundle Mall at 3.30pm and then some shopping to close out the day? Early dinner? Early lunch in a cafe then head to the game? This is the whole point. Get the CBD moving a bit over ALL the weekend.

It is Hondo, I agree. Lets use Sat afternoon games as an example - Is me deciding to go to a game going to hinge on going to town each time? Friday night logic I can sort of understand because I work in town most of the time. Saturday afternoon games is different. Sunday games is also different.

The key argument here is what's gonna make me get out of my chair (I've got Foxtel remember) and go to Adelaide Oval? Friday night, Sat arvo, Sat night, Sunday, Sunday twilight?

Certainly there is an attraction for younger folk for Friday nights I completely admit that. I was 30 when I moved to Melbourne and drank at the Imperial hotel across from parliament house. The atmosphere there was brilliant on Friday's after work EXCEPT when there was an interstate game and the place was empty. Will it work in Adelaide when we get maybe two games a year on a Friday night though? I just dunno.

I hope we haven't (as a society) pinned our hopes that crowds will increase and people will flock to Adel oval to see the footy - for the next 30 years (to pay the stadium off). Remember, novelty wears off quickly.

The thing is if going to see footy live is dying then it has more hope at AO than it does at AAMI. I think the break evens are far less for both the SACA and SANFL if they only have to maintain one ground between them. So it's an insurance policy against more of a crowd downturn (which could kill the SANFL if it does nothing) plus it is more likely to motivate discretionary spending with the CBD setting rather than the rush to and from the car at AAMI.

Whatever reason for not going to AO you can x 2 for not going to AAMI

AO is much more accesible by public transport however.

Exactly my point

I think we must be one of the lowest users of our CBD on weekends out of all Australian cities except maybe Perth which is even more of a ghost town on weekends and has even more backward shopping hours.

There's a lot of reasons for that and AFL games in the CBD is just one part of the solution. But when the Test Match is on the city has a whole different vibe about it IMO. There's actually people around for a start!

Unbelievable, surely they've got to have it from near the Festival Theater/Casino and not force people to an area where they don't want to go.
If they make it to the Convention Centre then everyone will just walk down King William St like they would now.

As I posted in the cricket forum in response to whufc's multiple thread spamming:

Gingernuts wrote: The Advertiser advocated for the project until it was approved, and now will milk every minor talking point over the next 4 - 5 years until it is built. It has been a clear and blatant change of tact from them on this project.

I'm saying this is a pretty obvious strategy by The Advertiser - nothing sells a chip wrapper more than controversy over a public project. There may indeed be some robust discussion about the footbridge, as their has been about the car parking.

However in my opinion the deliberate antagonistic tones of reporting in the Addie since the YES vote are about nothing more than drumming up their own business in our wonderful monopolised one paper town.

Am I the only one that thinks the Advertiser's obvious change in tact on it's reporting of this project is a orchestrated strategy by them to sell their chip wrapper? Surely other people can see this?
