bayman wrote:''personality'' is an interesting word given the fact i think it is craig hutchison has the personality of a sponge (apologies to other sponges out there),

second, would be anthony or is it andrew maher (not sure of the spelling) with his comments showing a complete lack of respect & contempt to the sanfl with the comment ''it must be great to play in front of a crowd like this compared to the paltry 500 you were last year'' to nick duigan on the recent monday night match with st kilda, while commentators have been mentioned are they strictly media personalities or football identities ?

Yep, almost put the foot through the telly when I heard this.
And this is whay I can't stand him - this attitude that because he is a Victorian he deserves to be on telly and is a football expert
What has he ever achieved in football? All SANFL league players have achieved more than he ever has.

Cringeworthy stuff that I can't listen too.

Brian Taylor, Stephen Rowe I dont like either.......can't control themselves and get excited over sweet F.A.

Tim Lane I liked.

Hate this too, particularly on the radio, where these blokes think yelling at anything makes them sort of personality

All of this is the fault of the one and only ( and thankfully no longer calling ) Rex Hunt. This peanut has made yelling, calling people stupid nicknames and shouting at anything the template that potential start callers use to try and give themselves a name. Rex is an idiot and has bred a generation of idiots behind him.

It's funny, watching old you tube clips of Peter Daicos in action, one thing I noticed was that the commentators were still fairly reserved when issuing excitement over his many miraculous goals.

Nowadays it's a different story as commentators clamber over each other to rendition us with their latest audiological orgasms every time a player kicks a half decent goal.

With all the footy shows on TV ( fair to say I wouldn't know how many there are on each week ) we are going to be saturated with commentators and the more we need(?) to cover all these shows the thinner the talent pool will get.

Boonie beat me too it.. I despise BT as he tries too hard to be the next Rex Hunt, whom I absolutely detested. Robert Walls also pisses me off with his air of assumed superiorosity(sp). Actually all ex VFL players as they assume the VFL was the greatest comp that ever existed.

Well, that's because half the time now, players are just handballing it to each other or chipping it around. When Daicos played, it was more exciting to begin with. On top of that, he was expected to kick those goals.

Liam Pickering - smug player manager that pumps up the tyres of the players he manages
Alastair Lynch - another player manager in the media who had his hand out for a big percentage of Fevs income but dropped him like a hot potatoe when Fev needed some support and help. Jason Dunstall and Bruce McAvaney. Locally I cringe at S Rowe and D Wildy

I wonder if the standard of a commentator drops off the longer they've been in the game.
I spoke to someone in the industry recently and he said he doesn't enjoy the game any longer and doesn't watch it at home any more. It's too much like work.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

And if they are a former players, the standard drops off the longer they've been OUT of the game. There are exceptions of course, but I've noticed over the years that players straight out of the game really add something to the media, but then after they've settled in and become one of the boys, they start talking dribble like the best of them.

In a way I feel a little sorry for commentators. They are paid to "give their opinion", but are governed by what they can and cannot say, so they are not really offering their honest opinion. What I wouldn't give for a week of media people saying what they really and honestly think. It would be classic.
