Very hard to split. Having recently watched both games again. The talent in the 85 side might have been better and competition very close and the opposition in 73 went from very bad to very good. Played South 3 times in 73 and Sturt in their prime as the Double Blue team of 73 was one of the best but crashed in finals which was very un Jack Oatey like. 57pts in the Second Semi & 93pts in the Prelim which might have been the catalyst for the 74 flag. Will reserve my choice at this stage until further research undertaken but it will be close.

I agree, very hard to split, which makes it an interesting football debate. The 1985 team wins points for me as they managed to back it up in 1986, having lost Kernahan and McGuinness to the VFL. They also won buth GFs convincingly.

The 1973 team, after a great season, nearly fell to a rampant North Adelaide and failed the following season, kicking with the wind in the final term and not being able to capitalise.

I guess I am making my selection based on 2 things. The overall season, and the style of play. The 85 team weren't minor premiers, whereas the 73 team blitzed the competition in a fashion I had never imagined possible. They just attacked and booted goals. No matter how many goals the opposition got, they backed themselves to kick more.

No fewer than 7 players kicked over 30 goals for the year and another 5 kicked double figures. They were a goal kicking machine. People who prefer the more defensive aspects of modern football may not be too excited by all of this, but in 1973 Glenelg captured the imagination of the football public and ushered in what I consider to be a fantastic era of SANFL football through the 70s and 80s.

Did you think that they, more than North in the previous two years and Sturt the previous 5 years before that ushered in a fantastic era in SANFL footy. I guess it all depends on who your team is but I thought the Sturt and North teams were just as exciting. The main reason that Glenelg (and all other teams) were so high scoring in 1973 was that the diamond came in as the forerunner to the square. This of course meant less congestion at the centre bounce and consequently more high scoring.

The most exciting game I have ever seen had a final score of 10 goals 13 behinds to 10 goals 12 behinds. I don't think that high scoring equates to more exciting. The problem with footy from 1973 onwards was that there were too many blowouts.
