Am I the only one who gets angry when commentators and people in the crowd call out for "dropping the ball" as a free kick? There is no such thing as dropping the ball being a free kick! It's holding the ball!

Technically it would be 'incorrect disposal'.

Thats right, incorrect disposal being the reason the umpire would blow the whistle and pay holding the ball.

Shouldnt be paying "holding the ball" in that instance, it is classed totally different and under the laws of the game it is incorrect disposal, two totally different things

According to the laws of the game which I am reading now, law 15.2.4 (c) states that if the player drops the ball in the tackle it is play on unless the player has had a prior opportunity to dispose of the football, in which case Law 15.2.3 (a) shall apply (that law being that the umpire will pay holding the ball)
