Can't say I disagree with you Darth but in terms of global emissions you'd have to include the US, Russia, Japan and Germany and even then you'd only be getting to 60% of the worlds CO2 emissions.Darth Vader wrote:China, India etc need to be restrained and that is never going to happen.

not me - NEVER. Never and also readng the Adelaide now website theres a link which i will copy and paste that states Whyalla/Pt Pirie will be "whiped out" if the tax is introduced.
Its time for Julia to start talking on whats going to happen. If she doesnt it could do her more harm then good as voters will start to turn not knowing whats going down.
And fish can copy my post and reply with how much he likes on how much it will benefit me...but it wont with what i do for a living......And have stated i wont be changing my life to suit some person in canberra.
I cant just catch a bus for my work to compensate the fuel that i, yes i admit am going on about. Or catch a train or just walk around the block to the next job. Whatever the tax on fuel,4,6,8,10 cents whatever it still money out of my pocket and money that i wont have in my bank account.
There is plenty of other ways to stop carbon .....

Re: The Carbon tax.
Until the details of the tax (the amount and what it covers) and the compensation package are finalised it is difficult to work out who will benefit directly from the carbon tax.Dog_ger wrote:Hands up, who really thinks the carbon tax will benefit you...?
However I suggest that people and companies with low carbon emissions will be better off as they will avoid some of the tax. I suspect that people with high emissions lifestyles will be hardest hit.
Also, shareholders in renewable energy providers may get a benefit in share price and/or dividends.

I agree Bulldog announcing the tax so early before the details have been worked out just doesn't make sense to me. It has allowed the scare campaign to generate and sustain momentum and until there are details on the tax it is difficult to deflect that campaign.Bulldog wrote:Its time for Julia to start talking on whats going to happen. I have not read the previous 7 pages.
Where is this tax going to go...?
What's it going to be used for...?
If labour wins the next election, have no fear.
I will not play full forward for St Kilda.

My guess it will be used to ensure the ALP has a budget surplus and is cashed up to buy votes for the next election

Re: The Carbon tax.
Continuing on from this point I've had a bit of a look around for carbon emission calculators, which enable you to estimate your carbon emissions based on your household and travel practices. There are a fair few around - some are more user-friendly than others and some include or don't include various aspects of consumption/waste.fish wrote:...people and companies with low carbon emissions will be better off as they will avoid some of the tax. This one seems OK - relatively straightforward and it also has explanations and tips for reducing your emissions as you proceed. It will give you an estimate of your emissions and how they compare to the Australian average.

BHP.
They've just announced a $48 billion dollar mining expansion.
Carry on, though, we can't let the facts intrude on a disastrous tax.

BHP are taking a punt that it won't happen or will be reversed when this mob is kicked out. I reckon they will collect.

mick, that's Tony Abbott's line and it just doesn't cut it.
I think you'd agree that no CEO of a company like BHP would invest $43 billion on a maybe.

Are you saying that the Carbon Tax is a benefit for BHP and a reason behind their expansion? Interesting point, can you explain how?

Why not, a minority government, relying on the support of independents, massive union opposition and I would think sizeable silent opposition within the parliamentary ALP?

No, that hasn't been mentioned at all
I'm saying BHP have calculated that the carbon tax isn't a barrier to them expanding.
mick, commercial reality doesn't support your 'argument'.

If it hasn't been mentioned why are you assuming it is a benefit then? Which was the original question.

Re: Federal Government proposes a price on carbon.
Fair enough. The tone of the thread has been that the tax would be a disaster, so I was addressing that.
You're right, I agree that BHP doesn't see it as a benefit, but my point is that they certainly don't see it as a barrier to a massive investment.
The argument that they're taking a $43 billion dollar punt on what may or may not happen in Parliament is, IMO, fanciful.

So wouldn't this back up the claim that the carbon tax will not reduce the amount carbon dioxide produced? Remembering this tax is about reducing our carbon footprint not raising revenue.
