Federal Government proposes a price on carbon.

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

Rudd is certainly a thorn in Julias side but I'm not sure that he's a leadership proposition at this stage.

Here is the current market for Labor leader at the next election:

GILLARD, Julia $1.65
SHORTEN, Bill $3.40
COMBET, Greg $8.00
RUDD, Kevin $11.00
ANY CANDIDATE NOT LISTED $13.00
SMITH, Stephen $26.00
SWAN, Wayne $34.00
BOWEN, Chris $41.00
ROXON, Nicola $81.00
ALBANESE, Anthony $141.00
ELLIS, Kate $141.00

didnt julia say...i would be in line to be the full forward for the western bulldogs before i went for the leadership???

Adam Bandt's little slip on TV raises questions about "better off" and the green agenda.
To the best of my recall (after my "did he actually say that?!" reaction) it was: " A carbon price is an essential first step in the move to a low energy.. errr.. uh.. low emissions... economy.."
The cartoonist in my head instantly revealed a sketch of about 6 people in a single room wearing their woolly hats and homespun clothing huddling round a single candle for warmth.

Say goodbye to your plasma TVs or any long distance travel forumites! ;)

I agree that it is not going to happen, but it appears from Adam Bandt's Freudian slip that he may be more hopeful it will.

I'm sure most politician's would be happy for the interweb to disappear. People + information is dangerous. Lucky for them most people use it for pr0n, piracy and facebook.

Is it too much to ask what a carbon tax is? How many degrees will it drop the earth's temperature by? No one can tell me this?
Besides, if the temperature rises a bit does that mean I can get through winter by chainsawing less firewood and burning less diesel in the 'Cruiser ute?

It won't drop the temperature by anything, DV.

Depending on what you believe, the earth's temperature will continue to rise and climate change action hopes to slow the rate of increase.

In broad terms, the countries who have instituted a carbon tax are looking to reduce carbon emissions by the high polluting industries. Those industries will pay the tax, which will increase prices, but hopefully speed up the move to less polluting energy production. The Government hopes their compensation package will cancel this out through tax cuts and increased pensions, etc.

As for the firewood and diesel, you never know your luck :)

its a complete furphie. You know it, I know it and so do the pinheads on both sides in Canberra. Its like saying don't piss in the ocean when you are swimming because it will cause irreversible pollution and wreck the great barrier reef (sorry, dont use caps very often). China, India etc need to be restrained and that is never going to happen. Everyone influencing this stupid debate knows they will be dead before anything serious will happen (if ever?) and so its just populist BS that we have to put up with.

I should say I have been five weeks in Scotland and no one over there (who I spoke to at least) gives a royal stuff about this issue.

It was brought up on AA the other day that the Carbon Tax is actually a simple form of wealth re-distribution. The concerning thing is that they cant tell you who they are giving the money to, exactly what it will be used for and how it will be guaranteed not to fall into the wrong hands. I will need far more precise details before I decide whether I do or do not support the idea.

Unfortunately, the only information we are offered is, "Trust us, we are MPs and we know what is good for you and the country and have no self-interest motivations, and will not benefit personally from the wealth re-distribution..."
[And I'm not saying only one party does this.]

The price of the carbon tax if the polls can be believed will be Gillards's scalp, unless they can convince people they will be better off.......and convince key unions.
