I had been overseas for almost all the season
I was in Darwin September 81 and was in love
But NW was in a prelim final
I caught the flight to Adelaide too see the prelim final, the only game I spectated in 1981

It was one of the most frustrating games of footy I have ever seen
GL kicked with a typhoon in the first qtr and led by about 7 goals at 1/4 time
Late in that 1st qtr the typhoon swirled around to the opposite direction
GL had the hurricane in the 2nd quarter
In all GL had the breeze for 3 quarters
If ever a game was decided by the toss of a coin, then this was it

And I left Darwin for this game ....

I was in Melb for the Collingwood v Carlton GF with my old man, and all I wanted to know was the SANFL scores .. Was gutted when I heard them as I remember thinking we were a decent chance going in, but the scoreline suggested we'd been mauled.

I can't swear this is true because of the way memories of exploits can be enhanced with time but I have a recollection of seeing Shearman and Bob Day both kicking drop kick goals at Unley Oval from around the centre of the ground in the same match. I ran into Shearman in a pub in Melbourne years ago and mentioned it to him - he couldn't remember it but didn't reject the notion of it.

The only match I found where Shearman and Day both kicked goals in the same match at Unley Oval was Round 11, 11 July 1968. If it happened, surely it would have been mentioned in the write ups in the Mail or Advertiser.

I could see Shearman perhaps doing it, I saw him kick a behind from just ahead of centre at Norwood Oval. Not sure about Day, he was a long and accurate drop kick, but I couldn't see him covering a full half of a ground. Still, you never know.

He was a bona fide star and I would have been surprised if another VFL club didn't pick him up. I was always disappointed he never elected to play for the Hawks under the father-son rule.

Max played for Fitzroy in 1976, only played 8 games for 21 goals, 5 goals on debut against Essendon. He played in the first ever state game at Football Park in 1974 kicking 6 goals for WA.

His first up season for Central was productive but he didn't do a lot after that. He switched to West Torrens for awhile but didn't do much there either.
