oh dear, that's not very sporting given the circumstances ....
Maybe not very sporting, but a spot on comment in my eyes. It's not only after but during, The supporters up there are a disgrace!

Lightning McQueen wrote:OK, here's the scoop, it's not official yet I don't think but Smithfield is highly unlikely to be in div 5. It is disappointing to see what length's some clubs go to in their attempts to lure players, especially from a sinking ship. We've had some of the following scenario's:
Players being told by other clubs it's all good to go there because they have been officially told that we are folding.
Clubs gettind sh!tty with players not making a decision yet to see if Smithfield are going to be around.
Former players giving numbers to clubs of other players to try luring them out there.
Obviously the days have gone for playing for your local and where you grew up, the SAAFL and other leagues has become somewhat of a "big business", money talks and bidding wars have been rife.
In saying that, I'd like to say well done to Carey Payne who has had Smithfield's existence in his best interests before having a crack at any of our players, he has liaised with me to get updates on how we are travelling and not in a selfish way.
It's been a blast on here over the past few season's, I've got to meet some wonderful club people and gained a lot of insight into how other clubs operate.
I guess I wont be on this thread much longer and I wish all other clubs the best of luck for this season and beyond.
Always good chatting to the likes of zedman, Executive Member, Dark Knight, Ash Man, S Demon, Jabber, Mr Beefy, Demon Juke, sprinter and the list goes on, it takes many different kinds to make up a club and an association and I've been wrapt that I've had the experience through this site over the years.
I apologise for anyone that I haven't mentioned, there's been too many.
Regards
LM
Terrible news, it's never good when a Football Club has to fold. I feel really sorry for you LM, the work you do for the football club you love so much is amazing. I'm really disappointed with myself that I didn't get the chance last season to have a chat with you in person. I've already learnt so much from being a member of the forum and reading about your thoughts on things and to have a chat with you about footy and all that comes with it would great. I hope I still have that opportunity.

No one is forced to go up. If no-one sticks their hand up I believe we can have a 9 team comp.
Why should the Div 5 clubs be gifted a 'Bye' when one of it's clubs drops out? This didn't happen a couple of seasons ago when Edwardstown pulled the pin. Especially when there is a club that wants to play in a 2 grade comp (eg North Pines, Modbury etc etc) that won't be let in Div 7 cos Div 5 has a bye
Of course, what would I know anyway?![]()
I would dare say that after other clubs had seen what happened to Kilburn as a result, most clubs would think twice about it..name a club that stayed up or went up that fared well out of that whole debarcle.
I would put money on BOS taking it no doubt and do well in div 5 might i add. I think FC that Unley is an example they were the ones that survived div 4 when Edwardston left and the next year played finals.

Re: SAAFL Div 5 & Div 5R (2011)
I think North Haven OR Blackfriars would be crazy to knock back the chance to stay in Div 5 this season. There's two ways of looking at it:
1. After a difficult year it may be appealing to go back to the lower grade and hopefully get some success and momentum and back to Div 5. or....
2. Realise that Div 6 has proven to be an extremely hard grade to get out of in recent years. The main reason is it's actually not that bad a standard these days with clubs getting more and more professional and better players realising this and becoming more willing to play lower grades.
A few teams in Div 6 now were probably not expected to still be there by alot of astute footy followers so i say take the free ticket and stay in Div 5.

I think that might more have less to do with the fact that they stayed down and more to do with the fact that they recruited half a div 3 (at the time) side

Re: SAAFL Div 5 & Div 5R (2011)
Unley came 8th (6-12) the yr after we stayed up due to Towns leaving, wouldn't say a great year. However, we did manage to play finals in 2010 which could have potentially not happened if we hadn't stayed up.
Unless a club has very good grounds to stay up and reason to think a more successful year ahead then whats the advantage? If div6 isn't such a bad standard then whats the harm of staying there? Theres more to footy clubs than the div you play.
I would have thought a more competitive and successful season would be more beneficial to a club than staying up and likely struggling for another season.

Re: SAAFL Div 5 & Div 5R (2011)
its a shame that smithfield wont be there.
Had some decent games against them in 07/08 when i was at plympton. Remember the final in 07 when we won up there. Massive crowd we were up by 10 goals going into the last term they came back a bit but were to far behind. I played the best game of my life that day in the ruck had about 40 possesions
then played awful the following week against fitzroy think i was burnt out from the smithfield game.
But hope your club comes back bigger and stronger for smithfields sake

IMO we are nowhere near ready to go back up to Div 5 this season and I think that we should stay in Div 6. I believe that it will be more beneficial for us at this point in time to play this season in Div 6.
With the way we're going at the moment, every player in our squad expects us to play Div 6 football and are preparing themselves to play Div 6 footy. I believe if we did happen to be premoted back into Div 5 that will unsettle the group and all of our momentum going into season 2011 and therefore I don't think we will be ready for it.

you would think tho that if u were prepared to play div 6 and got the offer to play a higher div to div 5 it may lift the current squad to greater heights as you have the chance to play div 4 next season if all goes well? might attract a few more players poss i dont know?

ii's going to be hard decision for you, there is no guarantee that you will come straight back up if you stay in div 6.

I'm not sure that it would Bulldog, IMO there's a pretty big chance of that happening considering where we are at. We've been relegated twice in the past two seasons and we've ended up in Div 6 because we clearly weren't good enough the last two seasons to be able to stay in the grade (Div 4 and Div 5) we were in.
We are rebuilding as a club/squad and I think that Div 6 is the best grade for us to rebuild from. I think if we were premoted up to Div 5 to fill the spot left by Smithfield I think it would unsettle the group as we are fully focused on playing in Div 6 in 2011.
I don't think us getting premoted will attract any new players.

What makes you say that DJ? Would have thought North Haven would have first option?
What is the procedure in this situation? FC?
I have a problem. It's to do with the little man, the squashed-in French man, the naked little squashed up hairy boy! You know! With the hand feet
