Maybe to stop teams kicking to wide open spaces in the middle of nowhere in hope the ball goes out over the line for a throw in?
Or to put 'paid' to the deliberate out of bounds rule altogether?

I have no idea
Was just thoughts on why they might introduce such a thing O:)

Spot on A mum ...... and kicking to the line late in a tight game is a tactical part of our game , Why would we wanna make drastic changes to our great game . God we may as well take the offside rule out of soccer too just so they can score more. These bulls*** rules if they ever get thru will kill the game of footy

I've advocated that for both Soccer and Hockey for years..
Less frustration for the crowd leads to less crowd violence..

I like the rule but if they enforced the deliberate rule as it should be enforced then it wouldn't be needed.
Mind you I grew up playing basketball where keeping the ball in is an art and actually a spectacle of the game at times but in basketball (and netball) its when the ball touches the ground over the line not when it goes over the line.

Interesting point ... the interpretation and handling of when the ball touches or crosses the line is so different for many sports.

Football, cricket, rugby, tennis, basketball, netball, etc.

In the case of football, FFS, just leave the damn rule as it is ... cheers.

Thats why people are not watching and leaving AFL in droves and returning to real local football and now Aussie soccer Demetriou and his DESTROYERS have ruined the once mighty Aussie Rules RIP !!
SANFL 2000 - 2011 Central District 12 consecutive Grand Final appearances and 9 Premierships.

Pretty sure they only brought the out of bounds rule in to keep the game flowing. Preseason footy is not worth watching IMO.

agree 100%. The other annoying thing about this pussy version of footy is the 9-pointer. WTF?

How do you work out? AFL crowds continue to grow more than state league crowds, have the 3rd highest average crowds in the world behind the NFL and Bundeslagia while Australian soccer is at the worst state it's ever been. :?

Sounds like they're doing more right than most. Last year was the highest ever attendance for the AFL.
People coming in droves would be more accurate.

That's probably because those 2 teams are crap and have fickle supporters, Its pretty obvious that it's a local issue and not a rules issue if overall crowds are up.
Bottom line is the AFL get better crowds than th EPL, they're he highest they've ever been whilst local leagues are stagnant and Australian soccer is at an all time low.
Time to panic or lay blame? I think not, time for the opposite if anything! :?

If South and West had less fans going but overall the SANFL had record crowds then he SANFL would be doing the wrong thing too?

Firstly, $1000 plus memberships? Not sure which club that is.

Secondly, no more fickle than any other supporter group Wedgie. Perhaps not as strong as some either, but no less fickle than others.

Finally, the AFL must be doing something right. As stated, avergae crowds go up every year, total attendance records increase and TV revenue increases every time a deal is done. Not sure what more they can do.

Disagreed , but I do think the venue might have a large bearing too, certainly bigger than any rule change.
And the sort of people that go there, I regularly travel to Melbourne to watch my team play but don't go to Footy Pk simply because of the amount of clueless morons that go there.

I'll admit ( albeit no for me ) that the venue does impact upon crowds. No doubt.

Clueless morons, sure is. Typically more when I go to the Showdowns though. ;)

the constant rule changes are confusing for spectators and players

BWAHAHAHA. Surprise surprise a Dogs fan with their head in the sand. Record attendance, code expansion, record TV rights revenue (bigger than any other sport in Australia) says differently. And so many people follow Soccer in this country that a NABasketball game in Melbourne outdrew the Adelaide v Victory marquee match up at Adelaide Oval.

While the annual rule changes really do blow this thread has been full of paranoia but the post above is paranoia served up with a side dish of ignorance.

Head not in the sand my friend i am not as gullible as most of you AFL supporters who have lost there way and deserted the SANFL, you have all been duped into watching a sanitised, soft, pretty running no contact game for television audiences. Sure when the Crows entered the so called big league even i was seduced into watching however over the last 10 to 15 years with the yearly tampering and bastardisation of the rules this game of true Aussie Rules is not the same, quite a lot of us astute footy purists who have been watching for 50 years know which football is REAL.

If you know what is real why bother commenting on something that is obviously not? Elite football will continue to evolve and I can enjoy what is good about local footy and elite footy. Gullible? I think not my Canine friend. WOOF.

Ha ha, the argument has changed from people leaving in their droves to "I don't like it so it can't be good". I would suggest the AFL is a bit fast for you mate! ;)
Troll post is troll post.
Yeah, I've really been duped, North Adelaide play such an attractive style of football compared to Geelong!
