Leave our game alone

Talk on the national game

Leave our game alone

Postby Baldy » Sat Feb 12, 2011 11:17 am

Went to the NAB Cup last night and gotta say here and now to the powers that be in Aussie Rules land, "Stop playing with our game".

The constant rule changes from year to year are ruining what used to be a fantastic spectacle. The out of bounds rule, where the team who touched the ball last before it went out is penalised by a kick in from the opposition, that's assuming it didn't go out as a result of a spoil, is a joke. Bloody confusing to players and officials alike and added nothing to the spectacle at all. An absolute debacle IMO.

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT.

BTW Go the Dees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

Keep your hair on. ;)

That out of bounds rule looked great in the boardroom but it plainly sucked last night. Last night was a kick and giggle so it's exactly the place to give it a go. They are going to give it the flick so all good. Now if only they did that with the hands in the back rule then they might be on a winner.

Sorry baldy but 'they' aren't going to leave our game alone because 'they' have to make rule changes to justifiy 'their' existence.

Sorry REB, but I can't see how that out-of-bounds rule could have ever looked great in theory. It clearly lacked any foresight.

I assumed it was an attempt to get closer to Soccer so Foxtel can make more money selling it overseas.
If they are serious about that they will have to import Italian acting coaches... ;)

Maybe to stop teams kicking to wide open spaces in the middle of nowhere in hope the ball goes out over the line for a throw in?
Or to put 'paid' to the deliberate out of bounds rule altogether?

I have no idea
Was just thoughts on why they might introduce such a thing O:)

The main thing it would achieve, would be having games played essentially down the corridor and a little further wide than the centre square. In theory, this could lead to higher scoring games (as teams are forced down the centre, it should force more shots from in front or on lesser angles).

If that is the aim, and more games being played at indoor stadiums like Etihad, then it will make a mockery of the game. There may be a school of thought that 25 goal to 23 goal games will bring the crowds flooding back but as NBA/NBL fans will attest each year in the All-Star game, high scoring with next to no defence can also be boring to watch on its own.

Leave it alone and get rid of this appalling rule.

firstly i'll admit i didn't watch it as i was watching the baseball & sky racing last night, if this came into being a permanent rule could you imagine (i can) a forward player under pressure near the boundary line so he drills a handball into his opponent & it ricochets over the boundary line & the forward player gets the free & a shot for goal......nope it isn't right, it isn't fair & it could cost a team a place in the finals, grand final or a premiership just like the 50 metre penalty will one day as that isn't umpired how it should be (blatant infringes)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I didn't see any of the games as I simply refuse to watch this preseason BS every year. But reading this topic and also the stuff being put out on tv news etc I get the impression the 2011 rule changes are on the nose. Well folks the best way to send the message to the AFL movers and shakers is to avoid going to the games and avoid watching them on tv. If ratings crash so will their stupidity

Its the preseason guys. teams have 29 players, don't play their best teams and aren't overly concerned with winning. the only purpose these games serve is to add a more competitive aspect to a training run. Sometimes a good rule is discovered through this format (think ruck circle, the player choosing their advantage) that makes the game better in the long run. I am just happy that the footy is back on, even if it is a bastardized version of the real thing.
