I think Motley & Greer became Motley & Ebert and then Ebert & Weston. I'm not sure but I believe Hughes and Loveday may still be operating.

Hughes and Loveday is still operating at Albert Park, although not a retail store to people off the street anymore.

Yes NM played ST in a trial game on 9/9/78
The game was played prior to the Elimination Final at Football Park
NM won the trial by 56 points
Gary Hardeman had his left cheekbone fractured
The game was reported as being of high standard and an entertaining match

ST supporters at the time must have had mixed reactions to this game, and this injury

I certainly remember the game Mal. That other famous Mal(colm) Blight had a day out. He must have kicked about seven goals.

Given that Brian Adamson kicked 5 goals in the Grand Final on the previously mentioned Graham Reed, Gary Hardeman's injury was very untimely for Sturt.

I don't recall Baynes playing for WWT, I think he would have retired by 91 when the merger occurred.

I do recall though after his playing career finished, he seemed to switch to a new club every couple of years in an assistant capacity, even including Port at one stage.

He played for both West Torrens and Woodville; with the majority of his career in between at South. 13, 185 and 4 matches between 1971 and 1983.

They always took the night series seriously. A lot of the other teams didn't.

Another thing was that South weren't complete crap at that time.

Actually from 1977-84 was the longest period that South have been competitive since World Was 2. They made the finals in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983 and 1984. I believe that in the 66 years since full competition resumed in 1945 they have only made the finals 12 times 1964-1966, the aforementioned 5 times and 1990-92 and 2006. Not a great record.

His first fight was indeed with Adelaide High but he was 17 or 18 in 1964 when that occurred. I always thought that his best positions were Centre Half Forward and Full Forward. For example in the last minor round game he kicked 8 goals for North out of 10 that North scored. In the 1966 first semi final he played an exceptional game at centre Half Forward. I though that it was a waste of talent for him to play permanent back pocket on the resting ruckmen in North's 1971 premiership side and although he was a good full back at Glenelg he almost seemed to brilliant to play there. I guess by the time he got to Glenelg he had lost a bit of that run and jump that he had as a youth which enabled him to play ruck even though he would have only been about 6 foot 2 inches. He represented the state spasmodically from 1966 through to 1974.

He never seemed content at North and it seemed every second year he was in a contractual dispute which meant that he didn't start his season until about May. Finally after playing in the 1971 North premiership he suddenly was cleared to Glenelg, a move which may have just cost North 3 flags in a row.

Used to go and watch them , something different
From memory they were played mid week at night at the parade when NW played
Was it that several teams didnt back up well on the Saturday day games in the SANFL ?
I remember that announcement about this impending comp, I thought it was OK, unlike the garbage they are trying in 2011

I can remember a game at Prospect in either '68 or '69 and at the first bounce the opposing ruckmen were Anderson and Murray Weideman. The ball was bounced and Weideman just ran through Anderson, knocking him out.

That would have been 1968. Anderson returned the favour in the First Semi Final that year. No love lost between those two.

The first bounce saw Peter Anderson clash heavily with Murray Weideman. He did the same thing seconds later at a boundary throw-in and again a few minutes afterwards. "The Weed" came off secons best on all occassions Anderson made sure he was not going to be flattened the way he was at Prospect Oval and decided the best way was to go on the offensive from the start.
