Has this ever been attempted in AFL before?

Roos, Hay in contract wrangle

February 14, 2007

THE Kangaroos are embroiled in a sensitive legal dispute with their troubled defender Jonathan Hay in a bid to reduce his playing contract on the grounds he came to the club without disclosing that he had suffered from a mental illness.

"The 2001 All-Australian full-back came to the Kangaroos on a generous three-year contract worth an estimated $950,000, plus incentives."

For that sort of dosh,I'd tell them what ever they wanted, that is of course,I am aware of the problem in the first place.Therein lies the question.Did Jono know about this condition,or had it gone undetected until his recent public statement? Doctors records may show when it was first diagnosed, but,do the courts have the power to break the Patient-Doctor confidentiality clause?

But is it also a case of buyer beware?

How much does a player need to tell a club when being offered a contract?

Bollocks. The club is buying the player, not the other way around, its up to them to do the research. He has to tell them nothing.

I'm a Hawks supporter, so my opinions on Hay are obvious ones. In 2001, Hay was the best FB going around, and I honestly thought he could become the greatest FB of all time. He wouldn't negate the FF, he would beat him to the ball and outmark him. His kicking wasn't strong, but it never seemed to matter.

Ever since then he has played on reputation alone and by the end of 2005 I couldn't understand why he was still playing AFL. He was useless. To trade him off to the Roos was a bonus, I couldn't believe anyone would be interested in this has been. Last season he got even worse, I didn't think that was possible.

Here it is, after 5 seasons of garbage football, and the guy is still on an AFL list!!! The Roos were very stupid in signing Hay to such a lucrative contract as he simply wasn't worth it. Now the Roos have realised their mistake and are trying to back out on their agreement with Hay. Pathetic Roos. You signed him, you pay for him. Hay has every right to expect what the Roos initially offered him.

After 4 poor years with the Hawks, a smart football club would have placed Hay on a performance based contract. Big mistake Roos ... huge.

Yes a poor decision however Im prepared to give a last chance this year....this decision is completely offset by the brilliant recruiting of Thompson, although I think they were so happy with Thompson they didnt investigate Hay thoroughly enough....
