Wayne Johnston, sorry about that. :)

Round 1 against Eagles he scored 2 behinds
Got injured, came back in three weeks against Port and kicked two goals; 16 possessions
Finally in Round 5 he scored 2 behinds against South.

Whilst "injured" he played in a Carlton legends game which was the reason the club and Wayne parted company.

No. Probably because they weren't interstate recruits.

sorry ah, my memory isn't that good or your older than me to remember vividly ;)

Michael Gregg was a Norwood local who won the McCallum Medal in 1970 and started in league football the following season. An interesting character the "Galloping Hat Rack", a medical student who played as an amateur and refused to accept financial rewards of any kind. Can you imagine him in today's AFL where players think the world owes them a living?

Rod Pope was captain of Findon High School in 1961 and would have played for West Torrens except his parents shifting house and moving into the West Adelaide Zone. He started playing league in 1962. Maybe if the thread was "overseas" recruits to SANFL won changed clubs, maybe Rocket would qualify. He went to Vietnam in 1966 and played some footy over there, then returned to West Adelaide in 1967, then to Norwood in 1974.

I was at the trial game in '67 (if that's the right year AH) at Richmond which marked Pope's first appearance for Westies after his return from Vietnam. He was on the bench and to this day I can remember being stunned at the ovation he got when he ran on to the ground. For a trial game it was remarkable. Bit of a favourite son.

My notes are Pope's tour of duty ended in August 1967, and he returned to Adelaide to play in the last minor round game that season. The following year he won West's B&F. He was popular at both West and Norwood because he was a genuine bloke who always made the ball his sole objective. Great player was Rocket, and I still can't believe Williams didn't want him in 1974.

Thanks AH, I think you must be right, I've misremembered it as a trial game, when it must have been the last minor round game. Perhaps it had that feel because we were out of the finals race. It explains why he was a Reserve though, as he hadn't played all year. I suspect they picked him because it then gave him 1967 as another year of service for club records, life membership qualifications etc.
And yes, Fos cost us a few players, but he brought us a few good uns too.

My memory may be playing tricks on me, but something keeps nagging that he played 10 games or so for Glenelg.

Yeah he switched to the Bays mid-season in 1982

He kicked 9 goals in a match for Norwood and almost immediatley afterwards was sacked by them. It was alleged that it had something to do with his performance based contract. The other story doing the rounds is that he was cleared to the Bays for $18,000. He got a total of 36 kicks for the Bays, therefore each kick equated to $500 towards his clearance fee.

He stayed in SA for sometime after that. I think that he coached West Torrens seconds, but he now is back in WA.

He had at least 1 day out for the Bays though didn't he? From memory it might have been against Westies in a shellacking at Glenelg Oval?

I was too young to know why he'd left, I guess I'd always just figured we preferred Rocky over him.

He left because he was crap ... thanks for passing him on.

It's OK, the Bays give you Wayne Phillis and not that long after you give them ...

yeah what happened with butch going to norwood ?, my dad reckons he was going to be traded/swapped to woodville for colin macvicar but woodville refused & he ended up at norwood although there was talk that he was going to stand out of footy for the year (as he remembers it)

i remember the blankets going around at the bay oval collecting coins to send off two retiring glenelg greats one was wayne 'butch' phillis & the other i reckon was peter marker but not 100% on that....when butch went to norwood it very much annoyed me as a kid as i threw my bus fare onto the blanket & walked home.....butch you owe me 20 cents (must see toddy phillis)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Its a bit of a long story bayman ... Studley was going to leave as well and trained with Kerls at Torrens before coming back to the Bay.

Let's say there were some disagreements about the captaincy when Peter Marker retired.

Brenton Hartfield kicked 2 bags for Norwood, 9 in round 3, and 5 in round 6. Come round 8 he was omitted from the team to make way for Jim Michalanney and Tom Warhurst. I heard a whisper that Hartfield had asked Norwood for more money and when he didn't get it, starting looking elsewhere. I don't know how accurate that is.

Anyway, I recall that Glenelg approached Norwood and asked "how much"? Norwood asked for an ambit amount, and to their surprise Glenelg agreed to it, wrote the cheque on the spot. To be fair, Hartfield did put in some good performances at Norwood and would have looked attractive to another club at the time.

I recall the week he first played for Glenelg, he put in a fair performance and Glenelg won by a huge margin. People were saying Norwood made a mistake clearing him until the following week when Norwood trounced the Bays and Hartfield struggled to find the ball.
