Draft Selections

Watching the video of these guys last night, I think Port have done very well with their selections. Jacobs & Newton in particular remind me a bit of Josh Carr but both a bit quicker and Jacobs with a decent roost on him.

I may be wrong, but with our midfield not the greatest in the land, I can see these kids getting a go in there next year, and I don't think they would let anyone down.

Was having a mass debate with a mate of mine this morning in regards to Port's recruiting and turning those recruits into star players. My position is i dont believe weve done all that well. In our 15 years in the AFL we havent produced a "great" player. Other teams have a "great" or two, some three or four at any one time but at Port we havent had any. I'm sure some people will totally disagree and throw up a Tredrea or a Cornes or someone else, but whilst they were good, strong club men and very good on their day, their not a judd/ablett/goodes etc etc. The Clowns have produced 3 or 4 top class players in their 20 years...Roo, Mcleod, Goodwin, Modra, Rehn and prob more i couldnt give a toss thinking about. What do people think about our ability to produce great talent?

Francou, would be the 1st to come to my mind.
Roger James was so under rated it's not funny.
Burgoyne or Burgoyne's
Primus
Michael Wilson

I agree with you to a certain extent. There is no "great" players in the current Port line up but that will soon change with one T Boak making his way towards that status.

However, totally disagree with you regarding producing "great" talent. My main issue here is Warren Tredrea (as you mentioned). During Port's stronger periods he was the games leading CHF and I believe was considered in the same ilk as roo, mcleod etc. Had he not suffered those horrible injuries the big fella could have notched up 300+ games as well.

Perhaps a better way to put it is Port doesn't seem to produce heaps of "great" talent but a lot of "good" players instead :-?

Yeah I agree, we have done very well although my only concern is that none are from SA. May get burned later when they decide to go home?

There's always a chance of that, but I think a lot of that comes with the culture of the club. I may be wrong but I can see Port rapidly improving in 2012.

In 2011 I think they will be competitive and finish 6th-9th, hopefully our injury prone budding players like Gray, Hartlett, Surjan etc can stay sound & by the end of the season they have a solid base behind them for the following year.

I can see those guys peaking around 2012-2105 (along with Chaplin, Carlisle, Boak, the Stewarts, Broadbent, Pearce, Lobbe), this year's recruits establishing themselves in the side then too and getting amongst some good footy. I reckon it would be a pretty good place to be around for a few years.

Hopefully that keeps them here for a good while.

Ben Jacobs' kick may be a lethal weapon used off half back/wing similar to what we had with stuart dew when he first started his career with port. Not at all saying that he will be the next dew but with pearce and jacobs (if he gets into our best 22 next year (by all reports he will)) providing long legs into our forward 50, will give guys like dan stewart the chance to be one out.

Im hoping this sees improvement in our goal scoring efficiency.

Having seen a fair bit of Ben Jacobs this year, Port fans should be pretty happy with this selection, IMHO. Not convinced the Luke Hodge comparisons are quite correct, but he is certainly a ball magnet with excellent skills and the ability to place himself in the right places to win contested footy.

I think you will find that this might be beneficial in a way carey. If we had of axed westhoff we would have had to pay him a full year salary for being on the "senior list". This way we save by paying him a rookie wage (unsure of the diff) but he will be at centrals in 2011 so no biggie.

Ben Jacobs will be a gun. So far I have been impressed withf Pittard. He goes well.
Irons can play as well as O'shea. I'm actually looking forward to our future, if Hartlett can stay fit, between him, boak and grey we can really build a good midfield.
