Matthew Rendell has been appointed as Adelaide’s new National Recruiting Manager.
Rendell, who most recently worked at St Kilda as football operations manager and an assistant coach, replaces James Fantasia, who in December moved to the SANFL after 11 years as recruiting manager.
Rendell, a 200cm ruckman who started his football career at SANFL club West Torrens in 1977 and then played 187 games for Fitzroy and Brisbane in the VFL, will start with the Crows on February 12.
“Recruiting is an area of the game I have been heavily involved in at St Kilda for the past three or four years,†Rendell said. “So I’m excited at the opportunity offered at the Crows and can’t wait to start.â€
Crows chief executive officer Steven Trigg said:
“The Club has planned to extend its coverage and network, and Matt’s appointment is central to the further development and enhancement of how we go about this critical area of the Club’s operation.
“We’re genuinely rapt with Matt’s appointment. The head of recruiting is a specialist role, and to be honest, not an easy one to fill.
“To do the job successfully requires top shelf people management, IT literacy, and an exceptional eye/ability to assess talent – not to mention the advantages held by someone who knows the industry, the people and the processes, and doesn’t mind travelling!
“In Matt, we’re super confident we’ve got someone who covers all of that beautifully. The ongoing development of our list remains an absolute priority for our Club, and Matt, therefore, clearly has a vital role to play.â€
Rendell has vast experience at AFL level, including:
1981-1992: 177 AFL games played (Fitzroy/Brisbane)
1997: Melbourne Football Club Assistant Coach/Reserves Coach
1999: Melbourne Football Club Assistant Coach
2000-2001: Port Adelaide Football Club Assistant Coach
2002-2006: St Kilda Football Club Assistant Coach;
2004-2006: St Kilda Football Club Football Operations Manager
As a South Australian, Rendell also played over 80 SANFL games with West Torrens from 1977-1980, and represented South Australia on 6 occasions.
