It works, particularly when you look at the "target market" of migrants, 2nd generation australians etc... everyone knows what a giant is and they should be able to build some good brand awareness with a name like this. Looks like we have moved past the dud names of the 90's such as dockers and power.

Reminds me too much of the North Melbourne Giants and the Adelaide Giants, both failed ventures.

I like what Gold Coast originally did in having no nickname but then they stuffed it up by making one.

Better to let a nickname evolve naturally like traditional clubs IMHO.

Forgot the crows :D

In all seriousness though i wonder how many people out there started following their teams because of what they were called?

Yeah, but at least that came about from a state moniker rather then purely a publicity manager. Thats my defence anyway and i am sticking to it.

I think "Team GWS" works for me...

Problem is, I envisage giants as forest people, wearing green and brown (would be shocking footy colours)...

Just imagine if they got a vertically-challenged pimply ginger kid...?

Irish jokes a-plenty...

South Australians were traditionally "Crow Eaters" therefore Crows are anti South Australians.

It's be like the Eagles renaming themselves the field mice.

I don't mind the Giants as a nickname. Very much old school. The NY Giants in the NFL have been around for almost 90 years.

I am not a huge fan of the modern nicknames like the Power, Blaze, Force, Fire, etc.

The Giants baseball team's been around a lot longer than the NFL team stretching back to the 1800s.

Yeah but they were the NY Giants before they moved there in the 50s or whenever it was.

It sounds American enough to suit Sydney, which I've always assumed was an outer suburb of LA..
It's a bit of a joke for an Aussie Rules team though...

You could say the same thing about "The Redlegs"...

No logic - jokes are emotional.
The name is simply sooo American and typical of a Gridiron or Basketball team.

The parallel would work if Norwood were called "The Rednecks"! ;)

Seriously:
I just don't like the US influence permeating our culture and slowly changing it, so that now it is assumed they don't even have to change the accents, or terminology like "butt", in TV advertisements for our market.
