I say increase the salary cap a bit higher to stop players going to country leagues but impose heavy fines and lose of premiership points to clubs in breach of the rules.

yeah ok

The only problem foreseeable with trashing it is that the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer....unless the rich spend unwisely and start losing, then they will be poor....does that make sense

oldfella wrote:In my opinion the salary cap fails as there are too many ways to get around it --- eg Business owner supporter gives recruit job at much higher pay rates than normally applies --- clubs employ players -- players partners are paid money ---supporter golden hand shake & others -- none of which are illegal as not done by relevant club or by any registered club official.

Worst part about the issue is I can see no other alternate system which will work (given the impossibility to review tax returns).

As a Westies supporter I felt bit sad for Centrals the other year when they were caught (minor amount over I believe) as I understand that the overs were caused by finals bonuses (god saying that hurt)--- perhaps the salary cap should only apply to the main round with finals having separate cap????

Like business, as soon as you have rules a good accountant will find loop holes -- end of day those with money will find ways to use it.

I agree oldfella - salary caps just don't work. A number of AFL clubs have been pretty open about flouting it in th past and in my opinion the only thing that has evened the comp up has been the draft. In the NBL (which has a separate cap for finals bonuses) the cap has been ignored by a number of top clubs for years and it is only the import limit (2 per club) which has kept any semblance of order.

The bottom line - scrap the salary cap and put in an import limitation in the sanfl.
We used to be good :-(

I say scrap the salary cap, everyone knows that all the clubs do under the table deals to keep good players.

Just have a limited numbers of interstate recruits per club, this will then give a chance to all the promising juniors to show their talents in SAFL !

The SANFL will never scrap the cap but it was brought in at the insistance of the AFL so the VFL, which was just reforming out of the merger between the old VFA and AFL reserves comp could retain good quality Vic players. The SANFL brought it in in order to keep the development $$$ the AFL distribute to all State based leagues/organisation. Those $$$$ funds Auskick, league club development officers, U/16 and U18 NAtional champs, coaching coords, umpires development officers etc.

So, the cap is here to stay, it should be increased each year based on inflation and it needs to be policed properly.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Bollocks. The SANFL should just keep nodding it's head to the AFL, telling them "yes, we have a salary cap" to keep the AFL $'s rolling in. Why should we restrict the competition as a whole, just to benefit the Vic's? Interesting to note that most of those saying the SANFL should be very strict on the Cap support sides that struggle with recruiting.

Also note that those that are saying the SANFL should get rid of the cap are supporting teams that are allegally exceeding the cap.

What were you expecting Punk, and thats a serious question. What else would you expect clubs that dont have the funds that say Centrals or North have???

"Oh thats ok, we cant pay that amount over the cap for our recurits but hey you guys go for it, dont worry about that silly cap"

What world are you actually living punk?

I'm not saying scrap the cap, I'm saying continue to pay lip service to it for AFL $'s. Our club has recruited well, yet I don't believe that we're over, yet realistically, only the inner sanctum of each club knows whether they are over/under- apart from Port, someone on Mars who is deaf dumb & blind would be aware they're over.
As for the have nots- they should address their own mediocre performances & make hard decisions, not sit about bemoaning the success of others.
The SANFL like to be seen to be policing it, but to do it properly would require an audit beyond the powers they'd have.

COme on punk, you came out and said that people who follow clubs that dont have the recuriting power (ie the money) toi recruit like some others are supporting the SANFL policing th cap.

Like i said before Punk, what where you excpecting was my origonal question which you seemed to stay away from. Come on now, you put yourself out there made this statement now sitck with it.

And mate, you are saying scrap the cap, the only difference is you still want to convince the AFL you still have a Cap.

Punky Punky Punky

Port have recruited five players (according to this site) and, "someone on Mars who is deaf dumb & blind would be aware they're over."

North have recruited eight players (according to this site) and, "I don't believe that we're over"

If hope you had your tongue firmly planted in cheek when you made that last post as I could easily think that you are "sit[ting]about bemoaning the success of" a club that was on its knees, got its shit together and selectively recruited? Sound familiar??

Yes I ******* hate Port but I sure as hell respect them and Centrals for setting the benchmark for other clubs to follow over the past 15 years.

The fact remains that the SANFL is on very thin ice with the AFL $$$ if it is not seen to be policing the c[r]ap around the AFL development table the WAFL & the VFL wwill be asking serious questions of the SANFL counterparts as they do not want to see their better home grown players coming over to cashed up SANFL clubs. As the old saying goes its a poor bird that 5hits in its own nest, and clubs that 5hit in the SANFL nest vis-a-vis the cap (if any are doing it) are going to make it difficult for the entire football community in this state.

So I'm not talking about my club "struggle with recruiting" I'm talking about the entire "losing my religon" SANFL competition that REB so eloquently wrote about.

PS I'm sure the development manager at your club would be quite concerned about losing AFL/SANFL funding for his position, might have an effect on your chances of winning the U/15, U/17s & U/19s again.......

Personally I think this is the front runner for quote of the year, however, I have "selectively quoted" the statement so therefore I could be "taking it out of context"
