Players from both games to be awarded medals

Postby Booney » Tue Sep 28, 2010 1:30 pm

THE AFL will award premiership medals to players from the winning team this Saturday, regardless of whether they play in the grand final, the grand final replay or both.

Premiership medals have historically only been awarded to members of the match-day side, but AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said last Saturday's drawn grand final presented a unique situation.

"It is the AFL's view that any player who has taken the field in either the grand final, or the grand final replay, has had a role in his club winning the premiership," Demetriou said.

"As such, the AFL will present a premiership medal to the 22 members of the winning team in this Saturday's match, as well as any player who played in last week's team and misses this week's game for any reason."

Would be very hollow for big Gardiner if we manage to get up this week. A medal wont mean a hell of a lot to him I wouldnt of thought.

The other angle is players who have been dropped for the second game will get a medal too. Hmm.

with this line from Andy D.............

"It is the AFL's view that any player who has taken the field in either the grand final, or the grand final replay, has had a role in his club winning the premiership,"

that sounds to me like all 30-odd players that have played a game during the season should get a medal, as they have all contributed to get the team to where they are now.

but i rekon i'm with droppy on this one........if Leon gets dropped, and the pies win this week, Leon becomes a "premiership player" without ever winning a grand final.

Medal - No Medal. Leon should never be a Premiership player.

That's poo.

Does this mean that if there were any North Melbourne players who missed out on the 2nd game in 1977, that they'll get a retrospective GF medal?

Bah. :?

Bah. :?

Think u will find north had the same 20 for both weeks. I dont think anyone who doesnt play in the winning side deserves a medal. Everyone who played a game in the year should get one if Gardiner or Davis get one.

It's rubbish.

Gardner played last week and his efforts weren't good enough to get his team over the line. Simple as what.

This is only half a step away from giving Premership medals to players from the losing side.

I believe you have to WIN a grand final to receive the premiership/medals.
So in that regard there should be no winner for this year, As no team was good enough to win on the day.

Not right, cant believe that players that didnt manage to play in a winning gf will be classed as "premiership players"....

I think that at the top level all players who played during the season actually deserves a medal, it is a different game these days and players are picked for different reasons during the year. It is so obvious that unless you finsih in the top 4 at the end of the minor round you are not much chance of winning a flag. I cant see too many sides ever wining a flag from outside the top four, this would indicate to me that anyone who played during the season had a part to play in getting a premiership. The actual medal should not mean as much as actually winning the game and holding the cup, look at Aaron Keating! this guy gets a premiership medal and in the same year Riccutio and Modra do not. I dont think that the guys that dont play should have thier medals awarded on the day, just regonised as being part of the premiership team, which should include guys that got them there not just the ones that played on the day.

No knee jerk decisions of policy on the run. None at all.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Macca gave his back didn't he (when asked for it)? I'm sure that was Popplestone's (or whoever was MC, pretty sure it was him) decision on the day rather than something the SANFL wanted to happen.
