Extra Time or Replay?

If a grand final is drawn at full time, should it be extra time (5 mins each end per team), or a full replay? For what its worth, I vehemently disagree with extra time, and feel it should always be a replay. The right to determine the best team of a full season, IMHO, shouldn't come down to 10 minutes of football at the end of an exhausting game - but what are the thoughts of posters on this?

It doesn't come down to just ten minutes. It's a full game + 10 minutes.

I think extra time in this day and age might be best.

I agree with you 100% on this one CK. It shouldn't come down to 10 mins of football to decide who the team of the year is.

Although I personally believe extra time is the right answer, I am super excited that there is a second cracker in 2010, because that means I will be rocking the Jetty Bar in Glenelg watching the replay!

Go and play the game again, the AFL are changing rules so much that in a couple of years it will be extra time, just like the other rules they are bringing in, they are out lawing the bump and next will be the tackle so at least give us some excitement if we have a draw we play again

If that's the case, I knew it! Ever since we had the close matches in 2005/06, I could see the rule being changed after it happened!

I thinks it's a good idea, gives the H&A season more meaning.

Oh noes! The game could be decided in 10 minutes of football.

If they can do it during the replay, then it should be good enough for the main game.

I don't like the extra time idea as it is the start of a slippery slope - extra extra time, penalty shoot outs, then if it is all tied away deciding by the toss of a coin. It all sounds a bit Soccerish!
Besides the AFL will get extra money for the extra GF, and from next season they'll probably instruct the umpires to make sure all GFs are draws and need a repeat!

From a purists' perspective I think a full replay is the best answer. However, I think of the supporters who spent $1000 for a ticket package and now have to do it all again. Air fares will be through the roof. The players now have a 2 week longer season than the other teams and will start training for next year 2 weeks later.

I also feel that an extra week, injuries, different selections, etc all distort what was meant to be a season that had built up to today. Now Ross Lyon gets a second chance to play the second ruckman or deal with Maxwell differently, for example. The advantages the coaches had achieved on the day are now lost.

So on balance I think everything is emotionally built up and prepared for a result today and we should have ensured there is a result today. Extra time is not the same as a penalty shoot out. As Barto said, it becomes a 100 minute game instead of an 80 minute game (plus time on).

I think the game should be replayed the following Saturday, drawn games only come around every 30 years or so, why are we making a fuss over it now.

The AFL are rubbing their hands with glee, the hospitality trade would be overjoyed, the bus and airline companies will be floating on air, all the football writers will have to postpone their long awaited holidays and put in for overtime, the TV Network will now have to juggle things around, as I'd imagine that all the OB units have been hired out to Bathurst for the weekend, all I can say is, thenk goodness the Wiggles have not booked the MCG for next Saturday .

That would be a good idea so long as every team played each other an equal number of times in the home and away season. Unfortunately that doesn't happen in the AFL so it wouldn't be a fair way to decide a premiership winner.

During the Minor Round = Draw
During the Finals = Extra Time
In a Grand Final = Replay
In a GF Replay = Extra Time

WTF?

Just play Extra Time in every scenario and has some consistency in the game.

Only positive is that some real members/fans will be able to attend the GF and there will be less corporates

I like that thought... Not necessarily everything you've said, but doing something that doesn't ignore the 22 weeks of hard slog before the finals...
