Much too afraid to step outside the circle.

Why should they step outside the circle? History proves that those appointed from within and keeping the structure simple - have success.

If you want to look real closely at it, how is this?
At the Magpies
Fos Williams - how many premierships?
Jack Cahill - followed Fos and one would have to say "he could coach"
God (aka Russell Ebert) - not so successful, but did get us into a Grand Final (which we should have won).
Jack again - what more need be said?
Steve Williams - carried it on
Matthew Knights - outsider who couldn't coach a grape vine up a trellis (& still can't)
Tim Ginever - had no hope of restoring the balance after outsider Knights screwed it right up.

At the Power
Jack - the obvious choice as record spoke for itself. Maybe a bit past him at that level, however HE DID lay the foundation for Chocco
Mark Williams - another from within who "delivered"

I reckon the percentages of success by appointing from within are very respectable.

Could not have put it better myself X-Man.

On the other hand, you appoint Clay Sampson as the South coach and.......

Port Adelaide, despite it's current woes at both AFL and SANFL delivers more often than many other clubs, perhaps not in recent memory but certainly in most peoples living memory.

Plus, Primus is a Norwood/Geelong boy, isn't he? ;)

Unless Im mistaken , Port Power have had 2 coaches
Both coaches are not from within
Until a player from from the 1997 teams onwards coaches, all other people will not be within

If Port Adelaide Magpies win the SANFL grand final in 2011
and
Port Adelaide Power wins the AFL grand Final in 2011
How can the one club win both flags ....

"" The former Power captain becomes just the sixth coach of the Port Adelaide Football Club since 1950."

MY OPINION
Great appointment, Matt has that aura about him, lets hope he gets as much out of Port Power as Mark Williams did.

Interesting NM,
have you been hearing from some sources about Knights ?

On the NOT choosing someone from outside Alberton thing.

Fair enough it there wasnt any quality applicants within, but Matty is a quality applicant, and also has the natural presence to bring people on board. Anyone who thinks he is a clone of Williams is kidding themselves.

Anyway, it has worked fine for the Maggies over the last 50 years

Port Magpies since 1950;

Fos Williams, Geof Motley, John Cahill (3 stints), Russell Ebert, Stephen Williams, Matthew Knights, Tim Ginevar & Tony Bamford

That's 8 if you don't include Cahills other 2 stints.

******* peanut.
