I must admit I hardly notice the umpires in the AFL but that's probably because Im used to the umpiring in the SANFL which is ten times worse.

A press conference for an umpire???????????????
FFS.
Agree they are a required evil for the game to happen but trot them out when one is retiring.
who f*ck*n cares.

Considering this is the one that James Hird bagged and rightly so he is a shocker.

Good riddance.

What we need is more like Glenn James. Gave as good as he got and handed it out in a humouous way but got on with the job and did not make a big deal out of it.

I suggest that to Stuart Wenn that you are batting well out of his league you little trumped widget

In his press conference he said that his career highlight was paying the Leo Barry mark in that grand final and that it'd be something to talk about at sportsmans nights in the future.

An umpire telling stories at a Sportsmans night about himself ????

they dont deliberately make mistakes.they are human and therefore will make blunders like we all do.i blame the rule makers who think they are improving the game by making it faster, and pinning everything resembling a free.especially holding the ball.if they left it alone and gave the ballgetter more lattitude it wouldnt be an issue IMHO.

They were talking about this on SEN, and they said the AFL could make a fortune selling tomatoes to throw at him as he goes around. One guy rang to say he wouldn't throw tomatoes in their skin, he'd rather throw them in their tin :D

Although in reality it would be a terrible thing to happen, the mental image of an umpire getting pelted with tomatoes does appeal to my sense of humour :)

I don't know why the AFL or the umpires association is even pandering to his requests.....

Firstly who would turm up to hear an umpire speak unless it was Glenn James and secondly instead of paying the Leo Barry mark he should have paid holding in the marking contest against the Swans Players who were scragging Quention Lynch from memory. And as for the motorcade, FFS get a life you maggot we don't want to see you there. Now F.O.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

It annoys me when commentators refer to umpires by their names.

Graham 'Smokey' Dawson of radio 3AW is a shocker for this. For some reason he thinks it's important to tell us the name of the umpire who's tossing the ball in from the boundary, signalling a goal or awarding a free kick.

Umpires are being afforded way too much attention and they're revelling in it.

Who would want to be an umpire after reading some the posts in this thread!

Some of the posts imply that the umps should almost be ashamed of their job. Without this "necessary evil" we don't have a game. Do we want them to change their identity and walk around with a paper bag on their had in shame of what they do for a living?

If the shortage of umpires at the lower levels is as bad as it sounds then having some AFL umpires be publicly proud of what they do and maybe braking down some obvious barriers can't hurt. IMO.

Back in the 70s and 80s, I knew a number of league umpires, and they would always tell you if they never heard their name being discussed it usually meant they were doing a good job. They actually welcomed anonymity. When you compare it with the "look at moi" culture of contemporary umpires, it just makes you wonder where we went wrong.

That's all well and good but do you listen to how some of the umpires address some of the players? It works both ways.
