The best of the rest: You name em

Postby Rik E Boy » Wed Aug 25, 2010 4:50 pm

This thread is for your favourite or best (or can be both) of the rest for the teams you DON'T barrack for. Here's mine.

ADELAIDE: Darren Jarman. An absolute freak who delivered a flag to West Lakes.
BRISBANE: Simon Black. Like a Rolls Royce this guy keeps on Rolling.
CARLTON: Anthony Koutafedies. I loved the way Kouta would scoop up the ball and bound away with it. Injury held back what was already an impressive career.
COLLINGWOOD: Gavin Brown. One of the most courageous footballers I have ever seen. I remember vividly one day when he hurled himself in front of a charging opponent to win the ball for Collingwood. Never got the recognition he deserved.
ESSENDON: Roger Merret. The toughest bloke in the toughest team of his era. Made a mark up north as well.
FITZROY: Bernie Quinlan. I am old enough to remember a time when Fitzroy were a gun side that was unlucky not to appear in the Grand Final. Superboot is one of the best forwards I have ever seen and I've seen Ablett, Dunstall and Locket. I reckon Bernie's kick is better than all of them.
FREMANTLE: Matthew Pavlich. I really admire the way he has stuck with the Dockers and the presence he provides on the field. I believe he will be rewarded with a flag sometime in the next couple of years.
HAWTHORN: Dermott Brereton. God I hate this bloke. God I'd love to him in Hoops! This was the guy to stop in the big games. We didn't.
MELBOURNE: Jim Stynes. Most people think of gentlemen Jim and his fight for his club and his life. He was also a darn good ruckman.
NORTH: Corey McKernan. At his peak he was almost as good as the King which is a big statement. With Corey and Carey at their peak North were practically unbeatable.
PORT: Gavin Wanganeen. Another bloke that made my blood boil but wouldn't mind having him out at Catland. He reminded me of the way Micheal Aish used to play but Gav did it at a higher level.
RICHMOND: Richo! How can you not love the high flying Tiger who wore his heart on his sleeve out there for all to see. Poor bastard only ever played in the one finals series and he carried the Tiges for many bleak seasons on his broad shoulders.
ST KILDA: Tony Lockett. Big Plugger is seen by many as a Sydney person but his best years were spent wrestling with fullbacks and his demons as a champion spearhead for the unsuccessful Saints until he and a few others pulled them up by their boot straps.
SYDNEY: Paul Kelly. Just like the songwriter, Kelly conjures up the image of an Aussie battler come good. His 95 Brownlow win was one of the most popular that I can remember. He is like a double shot of Brett Kirk.
WEST COAST: Peter Matera. Even though he tore us a new one on Grand Final day in 1992 Matera was one hell of a player (and I left him out of the Indigenous Poll LOL).
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Doug Hawkins. Hawkins was an absolute gun footballer who turned down big money from other clubs and only left the Bullies when he was no longer wanted. One of my favourites from the 80's.

regards,

REB

ADELAIDE: Darren Jarman, quite possibly the most skillful player I've seen
BRISBANE LIONS: Simon Black, dares to remind us that kicking the ball is still the most important skill. Big Jonno Brown rates highly.
CARLTON: Alex Jesaulenko, totally oblivious to how difficult the game can be.
COLLINGWOOD: Phil Carman, biased of course, but he was possibly the most interesting player I've seen. Absolutely incredible to watch.
ESSENDON: Simon Madden, showed the footy world that ruckmen could do more than just get hit outs.
FITZROY: Kevin Murray, a brilliant player who was also tough as an old boot.
FREMANTLE: Matthew Pavlich, no contest.
GEELONG: can't go past Gary Ablett Sr, a football freak, but my favourite Geelong player was always Peter Riccardi, great pace and top class left foot skills.
MELBOURNE: Jim Stynes, possibly the most popular player amongst all supporters. Robbie Flower was also a brilliant player.
NORTH MELBOURNE: The King, Wayne Carey. Sensational player.
PORT ADELAIDE: Matthew Primus, I don't think it is any coincidence the wheels at Port began to fall off after Primus retired. Great leader.
RICHMOND: Brett Deledio, best Tiger player I've seen since Royce Hart. Francis Bourke was pretty good as well.
ST.KILDA: Robert Harvey, Tony Lockett. Two of the greats.
SOUTH MELBOURNE: Bob Skilton, brilliant two sided player at a time when it was rare.
SYDNEY: Paul Kelly and Big Bad Barry Hall.
WEST COAST: no contest, Ben Cousins
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Gary Dempsey and Brad Johnson

ADELAIDE: Darren Jarman
BRISBANE LIONS: Michael Voss. Never forget the photo of him taking a mark in his hands with a dislocated finger sticking out to the side, he just hadn't bothered to have it fixed yet! As hard as any player I've seen.
CARLTON: Stephen Kernahan. A true leader and traditional CHF who controlled games of footy.
COLLINGWOOD: Gavin Brown. Another hard unit.
FITZROY: Paul Roos. Just went about his business every week, just as he has done as a coach.
FREMANTLE: Matthew Pavlich. Not sure there's been anyone else close at that club.
GEELONG: Gary Ablett Sr. Was the kind of player people buy tickets to see. Created that sense of expectation every time the ball went near him.
HAWTHORN: John Platten. Probably biased, but when todays players are recruited as EITHER in and under OR running players, he is better than most at both of these aspects. Once saw him on a training run, on his own, in safety boots because he didn't have any leg weights.
MELBOURNE: Jim Stynes. Agree with AH that is incredibly popular. Never did a thing to annoy opposition supporters (annoyed his own supporters one day in a prelim final IIRC... But that run of 200+ games without a miss is likely to never be beaten. NORTH MELBOURNE: Wayne Carey. A combination of my comments on Kernahan and Ablett - a really dominant force.
PORT ADELAIDE: Roger James. Never got the credit in mainstream media that he deserved, IMO. One of the few 'old Port types' that the Power have had.
RICHMOND: Matthew Richardson. Entertaining when on song, entertaining when not (for all the wrong reasons).
ST.KILDA: Robert Harvey. An incredible workrate over so many years, went about it with little fanfare and just ran the taggers off their feet.
SOUTH MELBOURNE/SYDNEY: Paul Kelly. I'm showing a theme here, the tougher footballers are who I enjoy watching. Apologies to Bob Skilton whom I saw very little of.
WEST COAST: Ben Cousins. At his peak was just a machine.
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Scott West. Although could be a few others; Chris Grant, Brad Johnson to name two.

BRISBANE: Voss - ability to lead and i just never will forget the incident in the GF VS Scott Burns
CARLTON: Greg Williams - just a typical blue collar player who loved the in and under
COLLINGWOOD: Buckley - the booming left foot, the presence on the field, looked like he belongs 100yrs ago
ESSENDON: Matt Lloyd by a bees d!ck over Hird - who kicks like that these days, so reliable, the grass in the air
FITZROY: I can't remember that much about them, but I remember Paul Roos and the hairdo streaming down the ground.
FREMANTLE: Pavlich - loyalty comes to mind, ability to play on-ball and has strong hands
GEELONG: Scarlett - tough, unbeatable in 50-50 over so many years, attacking
HAWTHORN: Dunstall - lead out, take a grab, kick a goal. Repeat. Loved it.
MELBOURNE: David Neitz - powerful, not afraid to lay a bump
NORTH: King Carey - best player to play the game, toughest pozzy on the ground, he made it his own
PORT: Trerdrea - as above, CHF is tough, ability to turn on the left foot and shrug a tackle
RICHMOND: Richo - carried the weight of team on his shoulders, wore his heart on his sleeve
ST KILDA: Rob Harvey (bad luck Plugga) - the stereotype of best and fairest, just played the ball and worked it. In my top 5.
SYDNEY: Adam Goodes - really can play all 18 pozzys on the field, the perfect prototype of player, and 2 charlies don't lie
WEST COAST: Ben Cousins - my man crush, the runner, made working hard look good, the 05 prelim i will never forget
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Brad Johnson - smiling assassin, great small-med forward with goal awareness, ability to win a game off own boot

ADELAIDE - McLeod. But if Patty continues to play the way he does, he'll be my favourite.
BRISBANE - Jono Brown. (and Aker!)
CARLTON - I refuse to like anything navy blue. but if i was forced to like any of them, it would be Judd, but only because i loved him at West Coast.
ESSENDON - Refer to Carlton, substituting "navy blue" for "black and red".
FITZROY - Slightly before my time, but i can remember being a fan of Brad Boyd, no idea why.
FREMANTLE - Pav. Didn't realise anyone else played for them?
GEELONG - Selwood. Hard nut. Love him.
HAWTHORN - Hodge. Reasons as per above.
MELBOURNE - Stynes and Neitz of the old boys. Davey and Sylvia of the now. The way these two lads use the ball can be mind-blowing.
NORTH - Carey.
PORT - never really loved anyone from port, but i guess i'd say Tredders,
RICHMOND - Deledio.
ST KILDA - Riewoldt. The definition of work ethic. FAVOURITE PLAYER. EVER.
SYDNEY - Goodes. would hate to try coach against him. To quick for the bigs, to strong for the smalls. and Kirk. not a standout player, but done his job over and over and over.....
WEST COAST - Judd, when he was there. Cuz, when he was there. Now, like Beau Waters.
BULLDOGS - Scott West (and Aker!)

Adelaide: Tony Modra. Owned SA. Dropped the 'F-bomb' on live TV. Ditched training to go surfing. Took mark of the year. Plus, he bought me some beers one night at Joplin's when he accidentally knocked my pint everywhere. Absolutely legless.
Brisbane: Michael Voss. Hard as. Born leader. Nearly my first pick in any team.
Carlton: Craig Bradley. Definite bias. Favourite player of all-time. Looks better in a black-and-white lace-up guernsey.
Collingwood: Darren Millane. Pies fan at the time. Loss can never be underestimated.
Essendon: Terry Daniher. Another hardnut. Play him anywhere. Shades Paul Weston.
Fitzroy: Mick Conlan. Goal in the '86 EF vs Essendon was a cracker.
Fremantle: Water-polo players. Crazy SOBs who inspired Neesham's schizo game-plan. Never gonna work. But geez it was fun to watch.
Geelong: Mark Jackson. Had to fit him in here somewhere. Who didn't love his antics? Sad thing was he could play. But would rather play the clown.
Gold Coast: Gary Ablett Jnr. Everybody's favourite son/favourite Sun.
Hawthorn: Dermott Brereton. Kissed opponents, ran through opposition team huddles and turned it on in big games. All with a cocksure swagger. Strut, Dermie, strut!
Melbourne: Jeff Farmer. Never knew what he was gonna do. Which made him so entertaining to watch.
North Melbourne: Matthew Larkin. Classy. 'Bobbing' goal under lights at the MCG a particular highlight.
Richmond: Gary Frangalas. Possibly the greatest name in the history of the universe. Pure poetry.
St. Kilda: Robbie Muir. Recommend 'Mad Dog's Greatest Hits' to every footy fan. Val Perovic signed my copy.
Sydney: Brett Kirk. Epitomizes the Bloods. Not the prettiest footballer around. But the most committed. Never say die!
West Coast: Peter Matera. Freak.Once saw him sccop-up a half-volley at full pelt. Freak.
Western Bulldogs: Tony Liberatore. Shorties stick together. Someone barely five foot with his boots on who couldn't kick over a jam jar really had no right making it to the top level. Never mind winning a Brownlow.
Everyone can eat s#!t! A big bag of s#!t! I'm the greatest man in the world!
