Have to agree with REB while he is a very good player i wouldn't put him the champion tag. I reserve that for blokes in the same era such as current players

An very consistent contributor and one of the best the AFC have had. Did a great job with the captaincy also. Wish him all the best in life after footy.

Congratulations to Goodwin on an outstanding AFL career, he was without a doubt a champion Crows player, and great leader at the club. What a great last game to play in too, knockin' Geelong off at home, ay REB!

Not one of my favourites, might have had something to do with what he wore...

Must say though he was a very good player who managed over 250 games, a couple of flags ( a long, long time ago ) and a fistfull of AA's. Good ordinary players dont have those sort of stats.

REB might be under rating him a bit IMO, but he is entitled to his as we all are. Where's sapaul?

So often retirements bring on debates about the definition of words like "champion".

2 time premiership player, multiple AA, club captain, 250+ games .... I think only 2% of all AFL players reach 50 games let alone achieve all that (unconfirmed stat I head the other day)

If that makes him a good, ordinary player well so be it ... I think he'll take the achievements if that's the tag!

A good ordinary player is not a sledge. He's a good AFL footballer. You have to have something going for you to last as long as he has but come on, a champion? I don't think so. Thinking back to his glory days and some of his team mates I can think back to this...

Mark Ruccuito dominating our younger bodies at Cat Park
McLeod running rings around us at Football Park on more than one occasion
Ben Hart repelling our attacks again and again

but I can't remember Goody taking us apart. Maybe racking up the stats but he just doesn't seem to stick in the memory like the players I mentioned. It's like me saying that Peter Riccardi is a champion. To a Cat supporter he is but to you guys Ricca might be just another 'Good ordinary player'.

If someone wrote that I wouldn't get steamed up, after all he is not Budda Hocking or Gary Ablett. The Crows have had champions and I reckon Goody comes up a bit short in that area. But that's just this writer's opinion.

You fellas spend a bit too much time sitting amongst your own supporters and in forums where there aren't enough opposition supporters and reading the Crowsitiser for your own good.

I remember him giving us a licking* on several occasions and perhaps you viewing his last few years from afar has taken the gloss off your view of him.

I like your Riccardi analergy though and it demonstrates the closer you are to someones career then perhaps the more you will give it credit.

His gambling indescretion aside he will be remembered fondly by the folks at West Lakes.

REB you got your nibble with your use of 'ordinary' but your points that follow IMO are in the ball park but not 100% correct.

Yes he is and always will be a champion of the AFC and no one can down play his importance and service to the club. (that’s a given)

What i do disagree on REB is - your point about Roo being on the AA panel is floored and irrelevant
- Assumptions made on purely Geelong games leaves alot of footy un accounted for in his career

With Goody's and Cousins distinguished careers coming to an end:

What are the criteria to be inducted into the AFL hall of fame?
How does Goody stack up?
Are all people in the Hall of fame Champions?

I think there's the obvious stand out players like Voss, Hird, Carey, Buckley, etc .... no one quibbles about champion or legend tags on those types

It's when you step down into the next layer that the contention comes because people get passionate if the same term used for a Carey is then used on a Goodwin. In this next tier there are players like Simpson, Goodwin, Edwards, Kirk, Harley. OK, they are more of the servicable type than the stand out brilliant type. However, those 5 players can point to resumes on their playing career that would include them in the top 5% of all AFL players if not higher.

Rather than try to tag them as "battlers who made the most of what they had" or "good, ordinary players" or "honest triers" I think we need to focus on their achievements and give them whatever accolades those achievements deserve. If a passionate supporter of them or their team puts a tag that seems OTT well, so what really. Footy is a passionate sport. Until someone defines exactly what is needed to be a "legend", "champion" or "great" we are left with passionate footy supporters giving their opinions as they see it, usually with some club loyalty bias thrown in.

I would have though Roo would have only been a selector last season?? would not have been when he was playing anyway, so take away one AA with your Roo factor, still got 4. Still 4 more than Riccardi. I think that comparing the two is understating Goodwins career and overstating Riccardis, in my opinion.

The Cows have had maybe half a dozen CHAMP players since their inception.

Only FREO would have had less.

RICCARDI, if he had played his footy at AFC, would undoubtedly have gone down* as one of their all time greats.

But then again, RONNIE BURNS would have been up there for the Cows...
