Game Changing Moments

Postby White Line Fever » Sat Jul 17, 2010 1:26 am

I'm still pumped up about the Crows win over Geelong tonight.

How good was Stiffy Johncocks tackle on GAJ!
How he held on I don't know, and at that point with the momentum swing and Ablett threatening to run over the top of us it certainly IMO won us the game.

What other moments in games do people remember?

My favs
1. Leaping Leo's mark in 05 GF
2. Chadley Cornes diving tackle few years ago when he held on with one hand
3. Daniel Kerr's smother 06 GF

Perhaps more game defining than changing, but the Scarlett toe-poke to Ablett in the middle of the MCG late in the GF last year comes to mind. Scores tied, just minutes remaining.

Dawson had made the spoil on Ablett, it looked for all money that Kosi would deliver the ball into an open forward line. The rest is history.

How did that "change" the game?

The obvious ones I can recall are:

Wayne Harnes 1979 smashing the ball back into play from outside the boundary line, play on, goal.

Ron Barassi bringing on Peter Hopkins at 1/2 time of the 1970 GF and instructing the players to play on at all costs.

John Kennedy moving Bob Keddie to full forward at 3/4 time of the 1971 GF.

Which one? If it was the goal after the siren, it was a game ending moment :)
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I wish he never did that! We played the man, you played the ball. You won the flag. We showed our inexperience that day.

I reckon some of Brereton's moments in that first half changed the game. Some small but truly inspirational moments.

Sam Mitchells tackle late in the game against Richmond this year was not only a game changing moment but a season changing moment for the Hawks - along with a smother of his in the game against Bulldogs in the last quarter.
As for Mark Yeates' hit on Brereton it was game changing but not in a good way for Geelong. Still one of the most inspirational things to see was Brereton go forward and kick a goal soon after being knocked a**e over head.

I'm just not sure how it can be classified as "game changing" when it was the first thing that happened in the game. To me "game changing" is when one side has the ascendancy and something happens to transfer the momentum from one team to another, like Buddy's two running goals in the final term against Essendon.

Shane Ellen started as full forward in 1997 Grand Final.

Jarman starting in the middle and drifting to full forward one out in same grand final.

Neil Crompton goal in 64 GF

Royce Hart's mark in 67 GF

Jezza's mark in 70 and Hopkins.

Laurie Fowler KO'ed big nick in 73 GF

Huge Brawl in 90 GF

Hird's last QRT in game against eagles in 04 was at Telstra Dome that night and I don't think I have seen anything better, I clearly remember a ruck contest where he came from nowhere grabbed the ball snapped and goaled.

Scarletts toe poke in 09 GF

S Burgoyne's tackling Guerra in the goal square in 04 preliminary.

The crowd running onto the ground after Gehrig kicked his 100th was fairly significant too that night.

Brilliant game of footy despite the result.

Wanganeen, after not having a kick all night, goaling from 50 out near the fence at the start of the last quarter was pivotal too. The game was full of moments like these mentioned.

Wangas' goal spree.

Late-third quarter, early-last.

Rioli handing off to Guerra when 50 out right in front. Guerra tries to get around The Hoff. Turn-over, ball goes to the other end. GOAL!

Port up by 14. Game over.
