It has to happen for the sake of footy is SA.
AFL revenue funds all levels of footy in the state and that revenue is dropping because people are not going to AAMI. Live TV against the gate and unattractive AFL game plans are reasons but so is the AAMI experience. Surveys show Gen Y and younger are not going to AAMI but will go to a city venue, and these are the ones that will fund footy in the future. Port and the Crows need more of the revenue they generate to compete with the other AFL clubs. We need more people at games and people who will spend money when they get there.
If we can't have a new stadium this is the next best option. Times have changed. Footy needs the move.
Some can see the big picture and unfortunately some can't.

Another reason I don't think it will go ahead:

Friend from Perth completed her nursing degree through Uni SA and was offered a place at RAH a year ago. I get a message the other day that she's unemployed and says that the state government have cut back on health funding and anyone whose contract was up for renewal was cut. The screaming hordes wont want money spent on the oval if they're cutting health spending.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Reading Kelly VIncents speech from Dignity for the Disabled it would seem that she agrees! Very interesting comments were made about how Carers for the disabled are given a very rough time here in SA.

Just build the bloody thing, or something. The SACA, SANFL or AFL don't run our state.
Whilst Govt procrastinate, the bigger issues such as Education/Health/Water are being overlooked.
Maybe the Adelaide Oval will be a hot topic for voters at the next state election.
Demitriou should keep his nose out of it, cos he's frigged the AFL up for the average punter.
Might move to Tasmania.

There's a valid argument that spending the money on a stadium or a stadium upgrade is a one off and depreciates over the years but it's pushing it uphill if your cutting back on health spending at the same time.

Why should the state and tax payers fund something that is used by such a small percentage of the population? [Maybe 40 thousand in 1.5 million each weekend.]
Just because the Murdoch press and their commercial friends think it will look better on the pay TV they are invested in, and are whipping up the idea that we need it?

Great article by Geoff Roach in the paper today. It's a pity he's retiring, he always puts forward a well thought and unbias point of view, unlike some at the 'Tiser

So the government should only spend money on something everyone will use? That item surely doesn't exist.

The benefits go beyond the stadium - local business, construction and related industries, the sports themselves will benefit at grassroots level which has untold benefits in the community.

Its all over the shop, where is Rann? He is the one bloke who should show some leadership here and make it happen, instead he sits back and if the SANFL/SACA dont agree he can walk away with clean hands....a bet each way

Less than 2.6% attend matches on the average.
More people would use local sports fields and most people would benefit from better health and education facilities.
The effects on "construction and related industries" are temporary, and some local business may suffer from the congestion more than they benefit from the extra crowds in the area - restaurants and good cafe's for example.

And no doubt various businesses like the cafes and so on at West Lakes will see thier own takings and value drop considerably, its not so much about creating new business as moving existing spending.

Can you back this up with facts smac ? Would be interested to see how much grassroots would get out of it.

Nothing finalised in any agreements, however a read of the Crawford Report (google will take you to it) will show why no Government will tip in funds for such a project without strict guidelines on how much of the related income will have to be spent on grassroots sport. Bring it on, the sooner the better.

The simple facts are; no one will come up with the $1.5b for a new inner city stadium, no one will put money into AAMI (other than perhaps SANFL) and the AFL will start programming matches at Adelaide Oval in about 5 or 6 years time. The whole thing has been unfortunately politicised instead of recognising that there is a unique opportunity for two sports to provide security for their futures from grassroots to elite level in this state.

Well said, it should happen. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I am yet to hear a good sensible reason why no to go ahead with it. People should just get behind it.

Oh well, if AFL comes to Adelaide Oval Ill just continue to do what I do now, be a family Melbourne member of Geelong and watch my AFL games lives at the MCG and Etihad.
If the redevelopement of Adelaide Oval means there will be no SANFL games there then at least it'll be a positive in that I never have to go to the place.

It's going to be interesting on Saturday how they manage the NRL game between the Storm and Dogs. I'm going and I can't wait to see how there going to manage the crowd even if there's not many there.
