AFL on C31?

Postby Booney » Thu Nov 23, 2006 6:47 pm

Today it appears the talks between Channels 7,10 and Foxtel have broken down.By news reports Foxtel had offered the dual owners of the rights $45m for the rights to broadcast four games each weekend. The duo had expected about $60m for the right to do so.I saw a CH7 boss saying perhaps community station Channel 31 or SBS could well hold the key to broadcasting into the much publisied nortern state market,Sydney and Brisbane.

With this, does the monthly price for Foxtel fall? As a non-subscriber,I would,if I did have Fox on expect to have my monthly fee reduced somewhat,AFL telecasts must be a huge part of the majority of Foxtel subscribers decision to continue paying the monthly fee.

Finally, who can pick up CH31? I get it fine. For free.

I cannot recieve C31 at Seaview Downs - shadow area.

Think many overestimate how many have Foxtel users also had the Footy Channell.

PhilG - when one considers they turned down the reported 45m and will be giving it away basically for free then your suspicions may have some validity

I cant get C31 and live at Warradale. Does anyone know how I can boost my reception to receive it? I have a roof antennea but its under a tiled roof pointing Mt Lofty way and also a set top box. My parents get it from Hallet Cove with bunny ears no problem.

I got foxtel mainly for the footy, being a Roos fan its the only way to see my team each week, I wont cancel as the standard of FTA has seriously gone to the dogs and Fox now has much more live sport in the past 12 months, cricket, Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, golf etc etc....unfortuantely to a degree I dont think I could do with out it footy or no footy....also they will have an extra $45m so Im sure they will put that to good use to improve things further

C31 in Sydney is absolutely crap.

AFL on a community station.

What an embarrassment.

The AFL said they would not let the footy be shown on community tv so its a non issue.
Just for the record I can't get C31 at Happy Valley with my antenna in the roof plugged into my normal TV but when I used amplified bunny ears sitting just inside the manhole connected to my PC I can receive it on my PC! :?

Big Andy D from the AFL said he cant get CH31 so if he has any say in it,which we all know he does,no doubt Les Murray will be calling the footy next year! LMAO

Fox has actually just gone up by about $2 a month ... The chick on the phone recently informed me (when I rang about a dead remote control), to which I replied "Haha so we lose the Footy channel AND receive a price increase" ... There was plenty of excited "we have this now, and we have that blah blah", none of which helps coz I'm not interested in it.

Unfortunately I luv my English Premier League too much to part with the service though, so I basically bend over and allow them to do as they please.

First the deal with Foxtel is off, then they are talking again, yet now I hear that it is off again! Foxtel are still too short of the money required for an offer and apparantly they are asking for 4 games into South Australia of away games for the Crows and Power. Fortunatley 7 is not willing to give up Crows or Power games into SA from interstate live, so that may well be what the sticking point of the deal is.

Unfortunatley there is not alot that you can do to boost your reception for Ace TV outside of the standard UHF areial. Channel 7 in their plan were supposed to be paying for their signal to be boosted which would sort the problem out.

The AFL seem unwilling to help, the easy solution would be to reschedule games so that there is not more than two on at the same time, yet that could mean that options like permanant Monday night footy might have to be considered which I dont think they want to go with.

I think that the C7 issue is right Phil, when I heard that 7 had the rights, I assumed that they would just restart C7 on Optus vision and just on sell it to people who have Foxtel.

Under the new laws, if you have Foxtel and want an Optus Channel, Foxtel are supposed to on sell that channel to you.

Still Optus are so small with their pay tv network that their start up costs would probably rule them out, I am told that you can only get Optus in certain areas of the Eastern states and it is by cable only, no satellite.

SelecTV are owned by the WIN network, yet they are to small to compete with foxtel as well.

Maybe the AFL got a little to greedy and didnt think the contract through well enough, if you are on the Crows or Power you have no problem watching them in SA, yet if you are with another side and dont have cable, you can see very few games! Where that goes this year who knows, I would happily watch all eight games!

Not sure how familiar Simon Hill is with AFL but he was a revelation as a cricket panellist on SBS for the 2005 Ashes series and fantastic for World Cup soccer and the A-League. I'd love to hear him have a crack at commentating on AFL!
