Rate the coaches

Postby Booney » Fri Jun 04, 2010 9:12 pm

Quiet *hiccup* Friday night at home and I started to think, how would I rate the AFL coaches? Now this isn't based on coaching ability, success rate or anything to do with their off field prowess, but how do I rate the current batch of coaches for their on-field ability?

The current batch of coaches in my view ( bar a couple that I dont know much about ) would pretty much all be considered quality footballers or better in some cases.

Coach - Ranking ( Playing ability )

Voss - 1
What a player this bloke was, tough, hard, honest and skills to boot. Galvanised Brisbane and turned them from Bears into Lions and 3peated only to now be at the helm of the club.

Roos - 2
Unlucky to miss the top spot and one of those who had the ability to play all over the ground. There is no doubt Adam Goodes ( as much as ability has to do with it ) is the player he is because of the fact Roos was the pioneer for players like the Goodes and Koutofides of the world.

Craig - 3
I must admit I never saw that much of Neil Craig as a player so I am going on stats alone. This bloke must have been able to really play the game. I had trouble splitting the next 5 or 6 players so stick with me.

Williams - 4
Tough hard and a natural leader, this bloke was good and there is no wonder the football community respects him. the Bears first skipper, Collingwood B&F's, Sheeds loves him, Premisership coach. Sod it, I should have had him in front of Craig....

Worsfold - 5
A bit like Voss. Brought a state together with a tough approach to the body and ball and led his side to Premiership glory that got the football community West of Nullabour licking thier lips for more. Membership numbers show Worsfold helped set up an AFL powerhouse.

Ratten - 6
Like I said, I had trouble sifting through about 9 of the coaches and this bloke might be the most unlucky. Once again ( a real theme of this thread ) this bloke never shirked the issue, spent most of his time 'in and under' and was part of a succesful group.

Thompson - 7
Again, a tough uncompromising player who was part of the ultimate success playing i multiple premierships. Half back, rugged, leader, this bloke has his game written all over the Cats of recent years. No wonder they are a tough nut to crack.

Malthouse - 8
Like Craig, I am going on numbers and as I have some idea of the SANFL Craig played in I have no idea of the VFL Malthouse played in so on numbers, Mick just pips the next few.

Harvey - 9
I like repetitive music, I like repetitive music ---- here we go again ! Tough, uncompromising, successful, etc etc etc. If you're not sure, read the 4 coaches above and this is Harvey. Bomber Thompson, just taller. Oh, and without the flags as a coach.

Eade - 10
Premiership half back/midfielder.....a.......tough, what is happening here? Team. Might be a bit unlucky to be at 10, but hey, you rate them!

Scott -11
LOL- Tough, hard, uncompromising half back who had the ultime success as player and is instilling this in his team today. Did he play with Vossy?

Knights - 12
Hooray ! A mid-fielder.... Knights toughed it out as a player while Richmond fans wondered where it all went wrong. Another bloke who could play, not unlike Ratten.

Clarkson - 13
Another little nugget who played across half back and never gave an inch. Imagine trying to pick a side based on todays coaches, you'd have three back lines to spread over the ground! Fotgot to mention he played in a premiership.

Hardwick - 14
Premiership player, twice and two clubs, tough uncompromising blah blah half back..... Did he play with Harvey and Thompson?

Lyon - 15
Never saw much of him and his numbers dont make me think I can rate him any more than I am.

Bailey - 16
Im fed up with writing this and Ill come back soon when I have looked at Baileys playing career.* Edit - 53 games as a midfieler at Essendon. Glad I put him at 16 *

So, have a go, rate the coaches...
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

I thought about this as long as it took to realise you had Craig above Harvey, Worsfold, Thompson, Eade, Ratten, Hardwicke, Malthouse and Scott, all premiership players.

Is Quinton Lynch a better player than Tony Lockett?

Lynch = premiership player

Besides, NC played in a premiership with Norwood in 1978? Or, are we also distinguishing VFL premierships pre-National comp from SANFL premierships of the same era?

He's surely ahead of Hardwick, Thompson, Eade and Malthouse. Harvey, Worsfold and Ratten? It's not as clear cut as you are making it sound.

As a player, Ross Lyon looks too far down the list for me. While not a silky star, he was a very handy player at his best for Fitzroy. Brett Ratten, in most eras, would be above Mark Williams IMHO (acknowledging that Williams was no slouch). Damian Hardwick surely above Brad Scott also, on a range of levels, and suspect that even Mick Malthouse would say that Rodney Eade should be above him.

No, but having seen Craig, I don't think he could've made it at that level. My opinion. I'd rate all of those guys ahead of Craig on playing ability.

If you have a go at my opinion saying that it's not clear cut how do you say "surely ahead of ...." with any conviction?

Craig better than Ratten.... you are kidding. Aren't you?

The biggest one for me is Harvey. He was an absolute gun. I can't have Ratts ahead of Williams though.

Well you do your list then as you can see, it isnt easy and my post has created debate which is what this site is about and what I intendid it to do. As I said in Craig's write up, I had trouble splitting about 5 or 6 of the coaches.

Did Scott play with Voss? Introduce yourself to a little emotion called humour.

Neil Craig was a gun and an apsolute champ, 319 games Two Time Premiership player, captained Sturt and SA in State of Origin,

It is Surprising that people on this site havent rated Craigy as high as other people, and have rated people that played VFL alot higher than SANFL...
and most VFL clubs chased him Through the late 70s early 80s
