This is the official competition, which I regret to advise is the usual Victorian-centric crap masquerading as a national selection process. Yep: play one VFL game and you're a candidate for elite recognition; 200 SANFL/WAFL games and... well... we don't even know what those initials stand for.

However, there's little point in whinging about it without having some names to contribute. AFL-era players like Ricciutto aside (who aren't affected as they are eligible), how many great players of Italian origin have starred in the SANFL? The only one who really sticks in my mind is Aldo Floreani (I don't know personally about his background but hard to imagine it could've been anything but Italian), but then my recollections only go back to after the mid-1970s. No doubt Anthony Pierri also qualifies, but because of the poor luck that he had to arrive in the era of Chris 'Tractor' Prime, he didn't get that much league action. Remember, it doesn't mattter if the person isn't predominantly of Italian origin, provided one parent or grandparent was born there.

Do people have names to contribute to an 'Italian stars of Aussie rules in SA' list? Cheers.

My bad, looks like they gone through 'the complete list of AFL/VFL footballers" and listed every player whose last name ends in a vowel..... :wink:

Research??!! I'd prefer to stick to my usual MO, shooting from the hip without thinking thank you very much....

I'm not sure that the VFL was considered the 'elite' competition in 1910, but hey who am I kidding? :wink:

I've taken a couple of liberties with modern day players (although probably only Ricciuto never made an impact at SANFL level) and I'm not sure if they all strictly qualify. It's a mosquito fleet side of dubious quality, but here goes....
