A statistics/yearbook c.1978?

Many years ago (well for me it was many years ago, I would have been 9 at the latest) I had a book which had heaps of stats records in the SANFL. It wasn't Kolosches 1976 book as this one was about A4 size; and also on the last page it had a picture of Brian Cunningham holding the T.S Hill cup up. On his guernsey was the "100 year" badge - hence making it 1977. It had all the finals results and ladders leading up to the last page.

As well it had venue records; extensive club vs club records - things like no. of times won by less than a goal and more than 100 points were included for example.

It also had a "best team" in there with a photo of each player. I'm not sure what period the team was - could have been post WW2, could have been all time - but (I think) Lindsay Head was named on the bench.

Does anyone have this book or know what it is?

I've got the book here in front of me, Spelly.

"League Football in South Australia", published some time after the 1977 season. Your memory of it is pretty much correct, except it is Russell Ebert holding the cup on the last page. The team is a "best of" team from 1877-1977, chosen by Merv Agars. The stats are all Kolosche's stats - an extension of those in the 1976 book, although some records don't appear in this one.

That's the one. I assumed it would have been an extension of Kolosches book.

I was there last week and I am pretty sure he doesn't have one at the moment (and I search the place pretty throughally when I go there ). He does/did have a couple of copies of Ern Kolosche's book though if anyone needs one.


Whilst I was there I did manage to "liberate" these gems

That's certainly it. I also remember that in the few years leading up to 1977 that teams scored 3000+ points in the season in that book - which included the finals series. I must have got Cunningham mixed up with another picture because of course Ebert was captain in 1977.

I wouldn't have thought so. Deane was a genuine centreman who played most of his career in that position whereas Head played a lot of footy on the half forward flank and roving.

The talking point was actually Hank vs Deane as the centreman. In the previous year Hank had certainly ranked higher than Deane in the Top 40 SA footballers as listed by Mike Coward and Geoff Kingston. Hank was normally regarded as the best centreman of the era.

As LL rightly stated Robran was named at Centre Half Forward and Hank on the flank.
