Just coincidence that a few of the Eagles players had incredible stamina during that year ... Lots of amazing come from behind wins #-o

Even after Cousins came back and played for Richmond when clearly he shouldn't have been allowed to, he continued the stimulants before a game and had to take large doses of relaxants afterwards because he was so hyped up.

You think he was alone?

Your a clown. If you had any idea of the effects drugs have on anyones life let alone that of a professional athlete you wouldn't be trying to claim it has improvements on their stamina, physical health or mental health. If he was a non user it would have been scary to see how better he could have been....

Amphetamines of various types, Cocaine, and more mainstream drugs like Caffeine (and it fashionable replacement in drinks Guarana) are all stimulants, and all addictive.
They will give people more energy as dedja suggests.

Sure, in the longer term, their continued and escalating use will cause complications that begin to impair performance rather than enhance it.
But that later effect doesn't negate the initial short term gain that is the motivation for taking them.

Was there?

Trailed at 1/2 time 5 times and won, 2 of them were less than 2 goals.

Geelong and Sydney were amazing comebacks, and Carlton shot themselves in the foot with turnovers and stupid mistakes.

So maybe go back and have a look at the season before you make stupid comments.

LOL, there's enough circumstantial evidence to suggest illicit drug taking, possibly performance enhancing, was rife at the Eagles during that period.

As per Psyber's comments, stimulants giving short term benefit should have been investigated at the time, and clearly Cousins was employing this tactic to his last AFL game.

How is that burying my head in ther sand?

No doubt there was drug use and no doubt it has somewhat tainted the premiership in some peoples eyes.

I just responded to your comment about all the "amazing comebacks" when really there was only 2. If you want to use arguments to support your case, at least make sure they are right.

There's some ill informed garbage in this thread, but this post just takes the cake.

The fact that he was using drugs for so many years but didn't test positive suggests the opposite. To say they were using party drugs to get through games is just ludicrous and a slap in the face of the strength and conditioning staff at the Eagles.

If anything, the drugs screwed up what should've been a premiership run.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

The AFL knew Cousins was a drug addict, yet still allowed him to play 'to assist in his recovery' after the Eagles sacked him.

Also during that period, Cousins was supposed to present himself for a drug test by giving a hair sample, but conveniently shaved down his whole body to avoid the test. Again, the AFL did SFA.

So please don't spin the 'never tested positive' crap because any normal human can clearly work out that the AFL didnt seem interested in nabbing him, seemingly because he was a champion player and it was a better spin angle to be concerned for his welfare.

Did they afford the same concern to Laurence Angwin and the like? Of course not.

And finally, why the faark does WADA exist for? to test for illegal performance enhancing and recreational drugs FFS.

I didn't specify what drugs the Eagles players were taking, but we do KNOW that at least 3 WERE taking drugs at the time. If you don't believe there was a link between this and performance then who's a naive little boy then?

Who's to say there weren't a few Swans taking drugs also that slipped through the cracks? Maybe they only won in '06 because Goodes, Kirk and O'Keefe took speed every week and that cost the Eagles a flag?

Maybe ...

But I'd go all in that the Swans under Roos and Kirk wouldn't stand for it, let alone condone it like the Eagles did.
