Cat News

Postby Rik E Boy » Sat May 27, 2006 6:28 pm

Welcome to http://www.wearethegreatpretenders.com.au, the website for all of your Geelong Football Club News

Training methods working well

Geelong have been working on a new training drill where the all of the players have to run backwards. The regimen was designed to introduce leg strength and has worked a treat..the club has now gone backwards at such a rapid rate that Doug Wade will soon be relisted because even at age 63 he would still be the best forward on the list.

Cats shop to diversify

In merchandising news, the Geelong Football Club will be introducing a new line at the Cats shop at Skilled Stadium. The new Geelong bait shop will be opened at the end of the season with players such as Cameron Ling, Josh Hunt and Andrew Mackie all being on the counter?? No..on the shelf.

The search is on!

The results of all of the soul searching that has gone on at Cat Park in the last two months are in: We don't have a soul. You have to have heart first.

Votes from the Geelong v Richmond game

The votes from the recent Geelong v Richmond game have been tabulated and the Maggots gave themselves the 3-2-1 as they proved to be the most influential men on the ground. Disappointed Qld Rubgy League officials have scrutinised the latest method of throwing the ball as invented by Darren Milburn and have stated that, while innovative, it was hardly throwing the ball so they have passed on the idea. Questions about how Kane Pettifer can plant his hands on the back of an opponent during a marking contest while Cameron Ling can't do the same thing were dismissed by Umpires (and former Richmond) 'coach' (pfft) Jeff Healy, er Gieschen with the comment 'I think you have to praise the officials as it was a top umpiring performance. Only three bounces went directly to the Richmond ruckman'.

Geelong supporters Club

The Geelong supporters club has organised a tour to the Gold Coast to take in the 'Big Four' amusement parks during September. We anticipate that this event will be well attended by happy Geelong supporters who will be spared the September heartache of last year. As an added bonus, club members will be able to watch the AFL Grand Final as some other team wins the premiership for the 43rd year in a row. We appreciate that people dislike change and that this is one thing you will never have to deal with at the Geelong Football Club

Kent to be on TV!

In entertainment news, Kent Kingsley will appear on Ripley's Believe it or Not and someone will give him a football to hold and to demonstrate the kicking style from previous seasons that we remember so well. A little bird told me that Kent's on air kick was accurate and that the host Dean Cain described Kent's guest spot as 'super'.

Costa claims world championship

Geelong president Frank Costa has won the inaugural World Patience Championship held at the Tangiers Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada. The whole tournament was actually an April fools joke to see if anyone would sit at the empty Poker tables and a trophy was to be awarded to the 'last man standing'. Most contestants realised it was a raw deal early on and shuffled out of town but Frank was pushed all the way by a plucky punter from Texas, George W Bush who was waiting for someone other than Australia or Britain to say going to and staying in Iraq was a top idea after all. As Bush left the building Mr Ace Rothstein was on hand to provide Frank with his trophy, Geelong's second cup in this highly successful season.

Skilled Stadium renovations coming in under budget

Geelong Football Club's efforts to remove the Reg Hickey Stand have come in under budget as ungrateful Cats supporters tore down the stand after failing to appreciate Geelong's remarkably consistent form this season. A beaming Mark Thompson refuted that Geelong had 'Bombed' out this season and that the replacement for the Hickey stand was necessary because the Hickey family was too ashamed to continue it's association with the Geelong Football Club

Next game against West Coast

Get ready folks for the next game against West Coast, a team we have had the wood on ever since they came into the competition. With their slow midfield and lumbering ruckman, the Cats are a monty to win this game and should go in favourites with the bookies to win yet again. No sir, we won't be getting ahead of ourselves..we've got 15 other clubs who will do that for us!

See you next week and remember..WE ARE GEELONG!

Umpires???

I think it was terrible for both sides!
What about Hyde takes a mark 40M from goal and has it punched away clearly after marking it?
Brad Ottens grabs the ball from ruck in the forward line is tackled and should have gone holding the ball under the rules?

I'll think you'll also find the director of umpiring was a past assistant coach at the Cats as well.

Anyway I don't care what you say about the umpires or what ever else we were too good for you today.

There's no excuses.

The umpires cost Geelong 4-5 goals but Richo cost Richmond 4-5 goals so its all squared, the better team won on the day.

On the umpires though, has anyone seen a worse decision than when the umpire gave a goal to Richmond by penalising Milburn for bouncing the ball calling it a throw? I've never seen such an amazingly bad ridciulous decision in all my life, do you have to hand pass bounces to yourself now?
Saddest part about it is the amount these AFL umpires that don't even know the rules get paid!

As silly as it sounds its probably about time Geelong do throw a season or 2 like the Carltons, Collingwoods, Brisbanes, Ports, Freos, Bulldogs, St Kildsa, Melbourne, Sydney, etc have over the years to get a decent draft pick or two!

Unfortunately for Cats fans Geelong has too much pride to do that though! :?

*ahem* Only top ten picks are Kane Tenance and we had to trade to get Brad Ottens. Which year was it exactly that Geelong had 'an armchair ride in the draft'?. The Cats have NEVER finished below 12th in their history..FTTCIL, Geelong are the second oldest club in Australia. I'd also like to know what alternatives there in AFL football today to build a club's fortune rather than the national draft?

Reb

In 2001, the Cats had 4 top 30 picks
#8 Bartel
#17 Kelly
#23 Gardiner
#24 Johnson

2002
#7 Mackie
#23 Lonergan

2003
#7 Tenance
#22 Thurley

2004
Traded picks 12th and 16th for Ottens

My point is, in this period the club has had 3 top ten picksand 5 other picks in the top 30, and traded two other top 20 picks in 2004 for Ottens, this club has had plenty of opportunity to build a side through the draft to be competive for 2006

My second point, any player picked up in the top 50 should have the talent ot play at afl level, it's then up to the club and the coach to develop this talent and turn the selection in to an AFL footballer

I get a little frustrated when people immediately point to the draft to rebuild their club, yes you may get an advantage in draft selection but this alone does not ensure individually that these kids will play 200 games or they will fit in to your team and club and structure, the draft is a lottery, it's up to the club, the coaching structure to take the gamble out of the equation.......

Look at the above selections, the Cats have had the opportunity to build a competitive team for 2006, they have not done it well enough, the use of their selections, the development of the players, trading of high draft picks.

and now they look toward the draft again, it takes more then draft picks to be successful

Not to mention Ablett x 2 and Scarlett (I think it was Scarlett I know it is a least one other beside the Abletts) for a mere 3rd round pick under the Father-Son rule.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

At first I thought it was a great bit of play. After the second look, it was a throw. Good call by the spazz in white(?).

Don't remember Port or Sydney throwing a season. Neither have had too many early picks in recent years.

If putting the ball onto the ground, ie bouncing the ball is a throw then Scotty Bamford is in big trouble, no difference in my book and on the radio tonight umpires board/coach has already admitted that was a mistake so you're the only one in disagreeance now.
Obvious mistake.

My "throw" quote was quite obviously a tongue in cheek dip at the way some clubs accept mediocrity and get rewarded for it.

From memory (and I could be wrong and am willing to be corrected on any of these):

1994 Sydney Last
1993 Sydney Last
1992 Sydney Last

2000 Port 14th

On seeing the replay, Millburn threw the ball away and up, even if it was only slightly. Im happy to be in disagrreeance with the AFL umpires coach.

Do you think Sydney finishing last in those years helped them win a premiership in 2005?

I think the problem with Geelong is they haven't had a good nights sleep since Nick Davis's performance in the semi final.

I say this as if I had a 2nd AFL side it would either be Carlton or Geelong, had ha bit of a soft spot for the cats since I was 6 and realised that Geelong and Glenelg have similar names (both have 2 x G's and E's 1 x E & L) so much for 6 y o logic!!

To my point of this email, as I was driving home from umpiring yesterday I heard the stat that Geelong have won 10 of their past 24 minor round games (11 of their past 26 games).

Maybe their time has past them by, and that the 2004 final loss in the prelim to Brisbane by less than a goal was their realistic chance as last year basically fell into the finals. LAst year they beat another side that staggered into the finals (Melbourne) and we all know what happened in the final against Sydney.

HAve they started their slide down the ladder a la Port Adelaide, Essendon and Brisbane and 2001 Prelim finalist Hawthorn....

MAybe a cleanout is needed and start again....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

1980 Tassie Medalist

I would of thought given that the core of this list has been together since 2001-2002 and the list is still a young list, their should be plenty of improvement left in this group........

So why are they not performing, is Bomber not getting his messgae through, has the side become burden with expectations, is their too much scaring from previous prelim losses or is their list over rated or a combination of all of the above
