Re: Week 2 Finals Live Scores @ Adelaide Oval

Clubs have screwed up this league so much.

Let’s not get emotional about one week of footy, let’s enjoy the SANFL finals for what they are.

Great footy at one of the best stadiums in the world with spring weather to top it off.

Let’s not focus on whether they should be there or not, three years after the decision was made.

Re: Week 2 Finals Live Scores @ Adelaide Oval

PoSA by 9 goals, just before lemon time. What a sad way for South's season to end.

But as Roo says, enjoy the spring weather, and don't cry about the milk the Crows have spilled over the comp. It's good for them, and therefore it's good for you.

In fact, South would be pretty upset ATM. Only 30 more minutes for them to enjoy testing themselves against some of the state's finest b-grade AFL listed players.

Re: Cows Prediction

As much as I think an AFL reserves comp would be the best for the two AFL teams in SA and the SANFL, I can't help but think it's an idea far from the mind of the powers that be, particularly with the recent development of the women's footy comp.

Grahaml's right, though: the SANFL powers stand to lose too much face over admitting the idea is a dud, and will wait for the grown-ups to make the call.

Good luck, Sturts. However, I think Guru Roo's Ravens will get the job done comfortably, sadly.

It's not all bad, Sturt fans. As the Guru said in his sermon a couple of weeks ago, don't worry, just get out and enjoy the spring weather and not get wound up in something that done and dusted. It helps the Crows, so smile and be happy. Your chakras will be aligned. Shalom.

No reason to doubt the Guru. His spirit is wise with 312 league games.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

I know from my time with an SANFL Club in recent years the players look forward to playing the Crows and Port because it gives them an opportunity to test themselves against AFL listed players.
And the first two weeks of the finals proved that a finals quality SANFL team when matched up against a fully-fledged squad of AFL standard players fails that test dismally. I'm sure the Centrals and in particular the South players love the concept right now.

You all just need to accept it wont change no matter how much you all cry on this thread!!
There's no mistaking the title of this thread. It's called the 'The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread'. Like most threads, it does what is says on the tin. You need to find the 'I love the reserves sides in the SANFL' thread, I'm sure it's one here somewhere. You're also free to start your own celebration of the the AFL reserves sides thread if you can't find it.

Perhaps we know that there's no chance in achieving the change we want. Perhaps that's not the point. Perhaps it's about simply venting our frustration, because for a lot of us the love for our club and the integrity of the comp stretches back decades, and we're entitled to be pissed off about change that (a) we weren't consulted on, and (b) is demonstrably ******* the comp.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

its ok though. the pro reserves posters will tell us that the afl isnt interested in destroying the traditional clubs. frankston and the traditional clubs kicked out of the neafl cant be used as examples of what might happen here as it isnt at all relevant. i mean, they are different leagues. the neafl is virtually brand new so just cant be counted, and the vfl is just completely different, or something....... anyway, we are all just whingers remember ?
Tipper, you should know better by now.

If in doubt, heed the teachings of Guru Roo. He knows best. He is a former footy player, who is paid to talk over football game broadcasts and runs a few pubs, and also sits on a footy club board. He is the definition of balance, playing to the line, and aligning your chi with what's best for South Australia footy. He says that you should get over it and enjoy the finals sunshine. He told this to all his loyal followers in the Adelaide Crows newsletter which is published on a daily basis. Hare hare, Hare Walker.

Brother Burtenshaw will gladly baptise you in the waters of West Lakes and convert you to the right way of approaching this issue, which is a non-issue if you see it from the Crows perspective, and is the way, the truth, and the light according to the daily Adelaide Crows newsletter. Once you give your critical thinking over to the teachings of the Nineteenth Man you will achieve total football unconsciousness. Shalom, may the Sauce be with you. Ohm.

Bone McDermott in today’s rag “30K turned up to the SANFL Grand Final so this should silence any critics of the Crows and Power reserves sides”.

Uses the same simplistic logic as Guru Roo.
Brother Bone is a hard-working disciple of the Guru, and his role reflects his lack of mental acuity. He accepts his intellectual limitations, and gladly demonstrates this by continually speaking and writing in public.

His prime role is to assemble the Guru's banana lounge on hot days at the West Lakes Temple. Also, the Nineteenth Man regularly uses his face as an ashtray when important guests arrive. Unfortunately for Brother Bone, so does Brother Bone.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

The thing is that, based purely on the evidence from the last three years, Rooch is right. The two AFL reserves teams haven't dominated the comp, on average. This is why the cap will probably be rejected. Plus, they're everyone's favourite, right? Can't disappoint the state's favourite team. TRB's point is well made, the squealing from West Lakes will start before you can say "Stephen Trigg is a cheat" if this proposal gains any momentum. We saw the Crows' propaganda machine led by Riccuito swing into full gear straight after the elimination final, desperate to quell the steadily bubbling unease. I'm surprised they didn't drop leaflets from the air.

There's an inherent problem at looking solely at evidence and facts as Rooch has, without highlighting individual areas of concern or incorporating an element of forecasting. You keep going along on the assumption everything is OK until things turn to shit, and then it's too late to undo it. That's the problem faced by the SANFL - they have sniff of trouble now, which could lead to further damage, but once the real damage is done in a decade they won't be able to wind things back.

You know, in the world of environmental management they have an interesting approach called the 'precautionary principle'. Those in charge assume that a project to be implemented will cause damage to something of significance, and the onus is on the person proposing it to demonstrate its not going to **** things up, rather than objectors having to demonstrate that it's inappropriate. That way, pre-emptive measures can be taken to prevent likely issues. Once you wipe out a tropical rain forest, for example, you can never get it back.

The SANFL is also a thing of significance. It's a pity the powers that be three years ago didn't have the foresight to protect our comp with a similar approach, as opposed to the traditional 'she'll be right' or 'suck it and see' philosophy. A philosophy which, by the way, suits the agendas of the AFL teams with no genuine interest in the broader health of the comp apart from their ability to exploit advantages from it. And a philosophy which fails to put a value on the cultural and historical importance of the comp, not to mention its integrity.

Of course, we all know why and how this has transpired. Decision-making and politics go hand in hand, and negotiations never occur on equal footing. Will this happen again re: the capping proposal? I just hope the SANFL clubs hold the line and focus on the future threats to the comp caused by the AFL sides' uncapped strength. However, past experience does not fill me with confidence.

Re: GRAND FINAL SYDNEY VS WESTERN BULLDOGS

The handing out of medals in the final analysis means pretty much **** all, apart from a ceremonious bit of post-match nonsense. No one plays to get a medal, you play to win that trophy and flag. Everyone knows Beveridge was the premiership coach, and none of the payers, club people and supporters need to reference a medal to know who the winning 22 players were. They are all immortalised, as is every premiership side (although this one has a special claim).

Murphy knows he didn't play, and Beveridge's medal won't change that. Murphy might give it back, and probably will, but for the reasons above Beveridge probably doesn't give a shit. In a footy achievement sense, some AFL-minted jewellery means nothing. But it was the symbolism of giving something up in such a public manner that demonstrated how the club feels about Murphy as a person and long-term contributor, and in their view, all round top bloke. He deserved something out of yesterday's win, some recognition, and the medal gesture was one way of achieving it.

All in all, the main thing was for Beveridge to invite Murphy up onto the stage to accept the cup. He did, and it was the right thing to do.

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts

We bought tickets to see Tex Perkins playing Johnny Cash tunes at the Old Adelaide Gaol tomorrow night. The idea is that he recreates Johnny Cash's famed live albums recorded in the Folsom and San Quentin prisons. Sounds cool, hearing those tunes recreated in an Adelaide prison with its own unique history, right?

Got an email from Ticketmaster this evening telling us that it's in fact an outdoor gig. No mention of it being an outdoor show when they were advertised and purchased online. So not only does it not do what was advertised (by saying it's a concert at a prison, it reasonably suggests IMO that the show would be inside that building, and therefore not as cool as a show held in the prison), it's going to be bloody cold. If they'd said it was outside at the outset we wouldn't have bothered.

What do people reckon - should we try for a refund? I'm really tempted.
So now, off the CUFF, it's outdoors when you thought it was INMATE? Sounds like they want to SCREW you.
If I was you, I'd do my BLOCK & then BAIL. No one in their right mind would give you a HARD TIME if you did.
I'd rather not COP the poor conditions, not enough HEAT. The ticket description was a bit FUZZy. I might be the SOLITARY complaint, but a refund would be worth the HARD LABOUR. Tex Perkins, on the other hand, should sing like a (jail) bird.

Re: Tribute to Peter Carey from 1987

Peter Carey was a champ, I still feel embarrassed to this day that as a 17yo my car was next to Peters in the traffic jam for the 87 GF and I abused him, I've already apologised to Matt for that as he was in the car. Peter just smiled it off. Watching Peter and Mick Redden have battles in ruck was a thing of beauty that I've never seen anything like since, worth the price of admittance to a game alone. The fact he played such an amazing game in 73 which was probably the greatest game of all time at CHF and was still playing in GFs in the late 80s as the no 1 Ruckman is a testament to how amazing he was. Met him a couple of times and he's a true gentleman also.
I too gave Super Carey a spray that day, and also somewhat unnecessarily, although my outburst was just on half-time of the grand final.

He had clashed physically with Peter Bennett after Darel Hart took a free kick on the half time bell, which occurred toward the northern end where I was siting. Spurred on by two years of grand final frustration and fueled by a match winning lead, I let poor old Super have it with both barrels (clean, of course, I was only 14 at the time and would've earned the wrath of the old man). The Glenelg supporting lady in the row in front was not impressed, in fact she gave me the dirtiest glare - I guess she didn't want to stoop to my level in front of her little boy (who had brought a home made 'Ross Gibbs Mr Cool' sign). Why did I have a go at him? Because he was Glenelg's most important player, he represented the heart and soul of that team. In a way, it was a reverse compliment of sorts. You know the old saying, "people don't boo nobodys."

Carey was probably the Bays best player that day, never stopped putting in despite never really being in it. Close to best the year before, too. I recall him marking pretty much everything that came to the North half forward line, particularly in the second term.

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch

Well done to the Senate with blockage to the same sex marriage plebiscite. =D>

Also great news that Labour will block the lifetime refugee document that DUDD DUTTON and his red neck mates have in place .

Yep; the Coalition went into the election with a very clear policy of holding the plebiscite and Labor and the Greens decide that they are more important than the people who voted. Democracy at its best.

why is it bad for democracy when the senate works as it should?
The Libs lost the right to piss and moan about the Senate being used to railroad anything after abusing it in extremis in November 1975. As benny alludes to, the senate's job is as a house of review, and it always has been. It's news to no-one. Don't like some crazies having the balance of power, or the other side of politics ruining your legislative agenda? Too bad, you should've won a majority in both houses. It's politically naive to expect the other side of politics to not place the government's legislative agenda under scrutiny in either house of parliament. To call this interfering with the government's 'mandate' (the most over-used word in current Australian political discourse, whatever it means) is nonsense. If Turnbull played his cards right and went to an election earlier than later, he'd likely be in a more dominant position now and would actually be doing something rather than talking too much and pandering to Tony Abbott's legacy or Pauline Hanson's assortment of nuts. He can only blame himself.

Mind you, there's an argument that the senate, whilst a house of review, is not actually functioning as the 'state's house' that it was meant to when federation and the constitution was drawn up. Time to adopt the Queensland parliamentary model with one house? Comrade Gough always thought the senate was 'undemocratic,' but then again he would've said that.

Load of wank IMHO.

Some teams that have used it have been top, some have been bottom, some have been in between. Hardly compelling.

Having been part of both the greatest dynasties in SANFL and AFL history is a pretty handy side note to add to your resume and marketing.

Leading teams strike rate is pretty handy especially when you throw in the on field turn around see saw at Norwood and South as well.
Throw in North Adelaide, Gold Coast, St Kilda and Melbourne and it's even more impressive.

I'm going to send a Xmas card to all 18 AFL clubs and 10 SANFL clubs.
If any of them win a flag it will be my Xmas card that caused it.
That means Port and Crows are going to get two Xmas cards each! Sounds like you're giving them an unfair advantage. ;)

Re: US

I have theory about how the Trump presidency is going to unfold. I reckon there's a good chance he's not going to honour the inflammatory language and protectionist/nationalist policies that marked the election campaign. In fact, I'd say he's likely to turn out to be quite an ineffective and lame president that falls short what he said he'd do.

The realities of office are that he has to deal with two houses of congress, and the agenda he spruiked won't be as easy to implement with the mere stroke of a pen at the Oval Office. You might say that Trump can't afford to not implement his controversial policies, because it would piss off the masses of rust-belt disaffected middle Americans who adopted Trump as their idol and savior from a modern world they see as having left them behind. They've invested themselves, their personal hopes and dreams for a better future into his idea of making America great again. They made him, and they'll be baying for his blood if he doesn't honour his suite of promises to build the Mexican wall, kick out all the Muslims, nuke Syria, bring back jobs and impose tariffs etc. He would become another member of the political establishment, someone who promises everything but fell short, just like all the other members of the political elite.

I say Trump, unlike all other presidential candidates (and political candidates), doesn't care about what he's going to do as president. He only cares about being the president. Like all massively successful male white businessmen, it's all about the contest. Trump, Murdoch, Packer, or whoever else don't take over companies and build extravagant buildings because their family will starve if they don't. They don't need the money. For them, business is a sport. It's about winning, the thrill of the chase and getting the trophy. Once you've won the match, you can point to the trophy. You have bragging rights. I won, you lost. The presidency is another trophy for Trump to put in his cabinet and point to in case you don't think he's a really smart and super awesome guy. He doesn't want to exercise the power, because he doesn't know what to do with it, as evidenced by a campaign that focused on why you should vote for him (or no Hillary) as opposed to outlining a clear agenda for what he was going to do when he got there.

The same way that people invest money in Trump's businesses and schemes is no different to the emotional and philosophical investment that people have made in his message. Trump's no stranger in the business world to taking people's investments and burning them for his own benefit, and walking away from the mess whilst telling everyone how great he still is. Trump's legacy to date has not been about it's substance, its all about style (for want of a better word) and vanity. There's no reason to suggest this is going to change.

I can hear Trump in four year's time, having been defeated in a landslide election, answering to his angry rust-belt supporters. They'll say, "Trump, you were a shit president and a liar because you reneged on all your policies that were going to start a revolution. You're just like all the other politicians. We believed in you, and you took us for a ride, **** you." And Trump will reply with his trademark smug grin and shrugged shoulders, "Hey, guess what? I got to be the president, and you didn't. Thanks for getting me there, it was a real blast to be the most powerful man in the world."

Of course, if this pans out like this it won't address the core issues at the heart of democratic politics in the US and the exclusion of large numbers of the disaffected. In fact it'll probably exacerbate it, but that's the last thing on Trump's mind, safe in his ivory tower in Manhattan and satisfied with his most prized trophy.

Ah, Leonard Cohen was a singer. You might be thinking of Leonard Nimoy, and he died last year.

Yep, sarcasm is hard to show on a keyboard :)
You're testing my irony-o-meter without the use of emoticons. ;)

And just to add more to the overlap, Leonard Nimoy did release some albums.

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts

Not necessarily the shits, but I don't get those protesting the Trump presidency in the US.

I'm no fan of Trump by any means, and I'm happy for people to exercise their right to protest, but unless they've got grounds to say he cheated or has done something that makes his election illegitimate it's just a whole lot of sour grapes and time wasting.

amber_fluid wrote:Anyone tried the new Carlton Pale Ale?
I have been to 2 pubs for dinner the last 2 weeks and neither pub sold it.
Just wondering if it's any good?

Dunno, but from my experience anything with Carlton on it tends not to perform very well. ;)

Where are they moving Younie to?

No, he hasn't been moved, he's just left early to sit next to Don Pyke in the coach's box.

Re: Save the Tigers

Hey, if you can get a good feed at the Glenelg Primary School I reckon you've gone on a good day. What's they serve, pi? ;)
In fact they serve Py. It's an odd Greek recipe though, made famous by a chef called Thagoras, and for some reason it always comes in a triangle.

I recall the first time I bought one, I looked at it and said, "No way, Euclydian me!!" However, in hindsight I think they took the right angle.

What an obtuse verbal barrage. We are acutely aware of your vernacular.
Sorry, can't help it. I'm always scalene the heights of expression.
