AG is in trouble over the Morphetville Jockey Challenge incident on Saturday. He was one punter that received a phone call about Mr Lever's pull out before the first race.

TWO top Adelaide jockeys and the Melbourne Cup-winning Kavanagh stable are at the centre of an inquiry into an Australia-wide betting plunge.

Jockey Chad Lever and triple premiership rider Paul Gatt are among six people spoken to by stewards after a suspicious plunge on Saturday's Adelaide Jockeys' Challenge at Morphettville Parks.

Sam Kavanagh, son of trainer Mark Kavanagh, who won last year's Melbourne Cup with Shocking, was also interviewed by South Australia's chief steward Graham Loch.

TABs and corporate bookmakers were forced to suspend betting on the challenge when an avalanche of large bets were placed on underdog Gatt.

The betting sting was only partially successful, but several interstate bookmakers are understood to have had hefty pay-outs.

Lever was a short-priced favourite on Saturday morning to win the Adelaide Jockeys' Challenge, with several potential winning rides, including two for the Kavanagh camp on promising two-year-old Tropic Thunder and Outlandish Lad.

But a corporate bookmaker informed stewards about 11am on Saturday that Gatt had been backed in from $21 into $2.40 to win the challenge.

Bets are believed to have been placed before stewards were notified that Lever would not be riding at the meeting due to illness and Gatt would replace Lever on the two fancied horses trained by Mark Kavanagh. He subsequently won a race and ran second in another.

TattsBet spokesman Christian Sawyer said they might have been "lucky not to have been stung more".

"We were probably at the end of the chain of all the betting activity because eventually we took an informed bet at $14 and that alerted us something might be happening," Sawyer said.

TattsBet immediately suspended betting on the challenge and when it re-opened the market Gatt was the strong $2.40 favourite.

Loch said an interstate bookmaker alerted stewards to the alleged sting.

"I was alerted by a wagering operator interstate that there was significant interest in Paul Gatt in one of the jockey challenges," Loch said.

"There was a clear inference that people had prior knowledge of the change in riding arrangements."

Stewards visited Lever's home to see why he failed to ride.

Kavanagh, who manages his father's Adelaide stables, says he will fully co-operate with the stewards' investigations.

The challenge ended in a triple dead heat, with Gatt, Amy Herrmann and Claudia Lions all on seven points.

Allegedly it was Lever telling a few contacts not Gatt.
