New South Wales fast bowler Aaron Bird has retired, bringing an end to a first-class career blighted by a suspect bowling action. He will continue to play grade cricket for Canterbury-Bankstown.

"I have had a wonderful time representing NSW and loved every minute of it," Bird said. "I leave with a great sense of pride and achievement that I have represented this great state, and am truly thankful for the opportunity and support through some tough times that Cricket NSW has given me."

Cricket has scored a rare victory over Australian rules football with the multi-talented teenager Alex Keath choosing bat and ball over a potentially lucrative AFL career. Keath, 18, has signed a several-year contract with Cricket Victoria despite the probability that he would play senior AFL football next year.

An allrounder who has been compared to his fellow Victorian Andrew McDonald, Keath was part of the Australia team that won the Under-19 World Cup. He scored 216 runs at 43.20 to be the eighth leading scorer in the tournament, and also collected six wickets at 16.33 with his medium-pace bowling.

However, his football prospects appeared just as promising when he was named as one of the dozen 17-year-olds chosen by the newly-formed Gold Coast club, which will make its first appearance in the AFL in 2011. The Victoria coach Greg Shipperd said Keath could be ready to make his state debut next summer, although 2011-12 was more realistic.

The veteran batsman Michael Dighton has been left out of Tasmania's list of contracted players for 2010-11, a group with few other changes from last season's squad. The Tigers lost Daniel Marsh to retirement and did not re-sign the rookies John Rogers and Wade Irvine in the first round of offers, but the absence of Dighton was more of a surprise.

Tasmania squad George Bailey, Travis Birt, Luke Butterworth, Steven Cazzulino, Ed Cowan, Gerard Denton, Xavier Doherty, Alex Doolan, Brendan Drew, James Faulkner, Brett Geeves, Adam Griffith, Ben Hilfenhaus (Cricket Australia contract), Jason Krejza, Rhett Lockyear, Tim Macdonald, Adam Maher, Tim Paine (CA), Ricky Ponting (CA), Jon Wells.

Rookies Matthew Day, Brady Jones, Hamish Kingston, Jeremy Smith, Tom Triffitt.

The former South Australia allrounder Mark Cleary has signed with Victoria for next season, when they will aim to defend their Sheffield Shield and Big Bash titles. Cleary was the only major addition to the Bushrangers squad, which also includes the promising allrounder Alex Keath.

Nick Jewell was the major omission from the squad after declining a contract to focus on his coaching career at club and under-age levels. However, Jewell has not retired and will continue to play district cricket in Melbourne and be available for selection, having been one of Victoria's most consistent performers over the past few years.

Victoria squad Dwayne Bravo, Mark Cleary, Aaron Finch, Shane Harwood, John Hastings, Michael Hill, Brad Hodge, Jon Holland, David Hussey, Alex Keath, Andrew McDonald (Cricket Australia contract), Bryce McGain, Clint McKay (CA), Dirk Nannes, Darren Pattinson, James Pattinson, Rob Quiney, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle (CA), Matthew Wade, Cameron White (CA), Damien Wright.

Rookies Ryan Carters, Jackson Coleman, Brett Forsyth, Glenn Maxwell, Will Sheridan.

New South Wales will look to Stuart Clark and Nathan Bracken to drive their bowling attack in 2010-11 after the pair was cut from Australia's contract list. Clark is being considered as a full-time captain and Bracken will also have a mentoring role as the Blues aim to develop their exciting young talent.

The fast bowler Trent Copeland, 24, has also been elevated to a full state contract following a record-breaking debut season. He joins a batch of young pacemen that includes the promising Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Moises Henriques.

New South Wales contracts Nathan Bracken, Mark Cameron, Beau Casson, Stuart Clark, Burt Cockley, Trent Copeland, Peter Forrest, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Phil Jaques, Usman Khawaja, Peter Nevill, Stephen O'Keefe, Ben Rohrer, Daniel Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Tillakaratne Dilshan (Twenty20 contract).

Mark Cosgrove has been thrown a lifeline having signed with Tasmania in the final round of contract negotiations after being sacked by South Australia. Cosgrove, who played one-day international cricket for Australia four years ago, was a surprise axing from the Redbacks' list for next season and was snapped up by a Tasmania side chasing top-order batting talent.

Australia's domestic Big Bash tournament will grow by nearly two weeks next summer, with the tournament set to stretch from late December to early February. In what is likely to be the last domestic Twenty20 tournament in its current format, the fixture has been expanded to 20 matches to ensure each team plays three home and three away games.

However, it is expected that this will be the final season during which the traditional state sides will compete in the Twenty20 competition. Cricket Australia is planning an eight-team tournament featuring city-based sides for its Twenty20 competition from 2011-12, with two new teams expected to come from growth areas in New South Wales, Victoria or Queensland.

"The bowler had a tattoo on the arm before the tournament and while there was suspicion it may have contributed to the problem, this has been played down."
