Charges of drug trafficking against Geelong premiership player Matthew Stokes have been dropped.

Geelong's Mathew Stokes has had a charge of drug trafficking dropped by prosecutors, but is expected to plead guilty to possessing cocaine today.

Stokes had been alleged to have trafficked one gram of cocaine when he bought the drug for a friend in February.

But after the 25-year-old's lawyer said he would be willing to plead guilty to possession if the trafficking charges were dropped, the prosecutors agreed to withdraw the charge.

Stokes's lawyer has told the court the player, who has no prior conviction, should be released without conviction.

Damm straight. We need some defensive pressure in the forward 50 because we've got Johnno going around at half rat power and Hawkins doing an Anthony Rocca impersonation.
