LEE'S TURN TO BE UNDER THE PUMP

LEE is in that catergory at the moment and needs an improved performance in Adelaide or he will be under the hammer from selectors and past players alike.
Considering he was my choice for most wickets by an Australian in the 5 test-series, his solitary wicket in each innings[in QLD] appears to have left me with egg on my face.
I thought his pace and his bouncer would cause great concern to several of Englands ' happy hookers' but it was the much -less-threatening pace of CLARK which included the hook shot from those who like to play it.
Should England bat first and LEE not make inroads, it is a real possiblity his place could be taken by allrounder Shane WATSON in Perth. Who would have believed that?

Winning form can sometimes mask certain individuals performances.
To suggest WATSON to replace LEE is ludicrous[and thats from me being a member of the Watto cheer squad !]
To replace out of form middle order batsman yes not Brett LEE.
Yes LEE promises a lot more than his talent suggests, but all teams need express bowlers
even if they are overated, expensive and occasionally dried of bags of wickets.
LEE'S only threat is if Shaun TAIT takes bags of wickets and puts the heat on LEE as then we would have a 150km replacement.
Jenners prophercies were vindicated to an extent.

What is you're obsession with guys who bowl 140km? Watson, Mahmood, Hilfenhaus...... 140 is brisk but not that quick. Pace does not get wickets at first class level let alone Test level. Watson can bowl quick but it is crap, Mahmood the same, Hilfenhaus, well he hits the right areas and will be a good bowler. Speed has nothing to do with success as a fast bowler. If you have a guy bowling consistently at 155 -160 km then that is a factor but 140 isn't.

WATSON = ALLROUNDER= AVERAGE BOWLER, agree
MAHMOOD = BETTER OPTION THAN ANDERSON but yet to prove himself in test cricket
HILFENHAUS = 7 WICKETS TODAY v SA and he is a very very good bowler

I have a penchant to obsess about up and comers in cricket, when I stab an unknown
it looks good, anyone can state the obvious about established players.
I enjoy seeing battlers + young kids defy the odds and flourish.
I will also have a crack at the overated.
REB is another who puts his head on the chopping block as well.
In the current line up for the Aussies in Test Cricket =

Mcgrath a champ but age will catch up eventually
Lee should be a helluva lot better, needs to produce more often
Warne best leggie Ive ever seen
Clark better than most think + at this stage a better bowler than Lee

other bowlers

Hilfenhaus a brilliant young prospect who troubles and dismisses good batsmen
Tait could be anything + ready for Lees fast bowling mantle
Hopes handy meduim pacer + handy allrounder
Symonds handy meduim pacer + spinning allrounder
Denton on his day a handfull
Johnson keeps improving could be anything
Bracken reliable swing bowler
Watson nippy bowler, good allrounder

As for 14Okm, that is the speed which is a sort of benchmark in Test cricket and a lot of champs
bowl at this velocity.
Guys who bowl at about 130 km are less likely to be superstars.

Gillespie is a classic case at 140km he was a devastating test bowler
At 130 he lost his zip and potency.
Mcgrath is an exception at 130 0r 140 he is a champ.

Lee at 150 should be on top of the tree BUT.....

I gave Daniel HARRIS a mighty wrap and he top scored 85 for SA v TA
Ive been talking up HILFENHAUS all week[and all year] 7/81 v SA
I gave Stewie CLARK a big wrap before the 2nd test and he did well.
I gave a big wrap last few weeks about Cam WHITE who is burning now.
WATSON another who i stabbed preseason who has done well in o.d games
I said MARTYN is finished ....
I say LEHMANN is captaining poorly.

They were all big calls but I got them right[none of them stars at all .....yet]

BUT I can f..k up as well

I said HOGGARD was the worst new ball bowler ever sent by England to Australia
Ive been talking up HOPES and he has been moderate since.
I said BURDETTS pitch was poor for cricket and it would be a draw in the 2nd test.

At the moment ive been right on some no namers

BUT I have a crack ROD and will live or die by the sword, and if you want to pick me off

Pretty good reply mal. I can't argue with any of that. Everyone has their own opinion and there is no way i can argue that you don't have plenty of experience and knowledge to back up your comments. I don't agree with you all the time but hey it would be boring if i did.

Yep can't disagree with that. What Gilchrist can do potentially is better than what Haddin can do though. When Gilchrist gives it away Haddin will become an exceptional international cricketer though.

But a mid 30's GILCHRIST is now only as good as HADDIN who is peaking.
When WARRRRRRRRRNEY and GILLY retire the game will be less entertaining,

Actually I 'haddint' noticed that apart from the opening batsman and the keeper
that they all could bowl unless someone else was captaining the team

12th: MARSH/BIRT

Older blokes: Lee, Hussey, Clarke, Haddin and Symonds. Core of experience still there despite no Punter, Warne, McGrath and Gilly. Lee to kick on thanks to his 18 months as a drinks waiter.

Bowling lineup: Five bowlers a must when Warney goes. Symonds gets the nod for the future, too talented to continue to replicate his current test averages. Remember he took a while to click at ODI level too. Watson talented but a lemon physically. Cullen has the most talent for mine, even though he appears to be a little down at the moment. If he continues to struggle with the ball, Cam White would be the threat to DC because of his superior batting. On this season's form it must be White but in Australia we pick the bowlers who can take more wickets, not score more runs and I reckon Cullen will get more wickets in the future than White. Hilfenhaus will emerge once Lee fades away but Tait would need to maintain the rage or Benny boy might blow right past him.

Batsmen: No surprise that I am a Tim Paine fan. At 22 he is already spanking bowlers across the country and is a bloody good gloveman. He eventually may be forced to become an ODI gloveman and a test opener he is that good. A gun. Jaques is first cab off the rank once one of Langer or Hayden goes and his appettite for runs and his grounded approach to cricket will serve him well and provide longevity in the game a la Mike Hussey. Speaking of Mr Cricket, I believe that he will eventually bat at number 3 and become one of Australia's greatest captains. Hussey's adaptability makes him perfect for number 3 - steady if the early wicket falls (and with opening experience) and attacking with placement and power when the pedal goes to the metal. Clarkey is a bloke who appears to have made the necessary strides this season, much to my surprise. I'd back him from here to be a better middle order bat than Mark Waugh. Voges from WA is another young gun who is also quite handy with the ball, this will serve him in good stead once the four bowler attack becomes less likely once Warne goes....Awesome hitting power from this Warrior. Haddin's time will also come, depending on Gilly's hunger for the game, which seemed to have returned after I thought his mind was on retirement during the 2005 Ashes series. Haddin is already mustard for International level and will step in once the G man hangs up his gloves. Haddin is no Gilly but will grow enormously if he gets the chance to wear the Baggy Green consistently.

So good luck Poms, this line up will kick your arse in 2009 or 2010/11 or whenever it may materialise. You'd expect Punter to go to England in 2009 and maybe Gilly but surely this is it for Warner and Pidge. Let's face it....we rock!

Good team REB However I believe Ponting will play for another four to five years making him 36 and Hussey 35. Ponting will play the next two Ashes series (2009 & 2010-11) and may even back up for 2013 when he is 38.....IMHO he will outlast Lee in the team.

I believe Ponting will last because of his natural skills and fitness which will allow him to play until he is at leat 36-38 a la S Waugh and A Border....

CA will not give Hussey the captaincy for one or two years....expect a 30 y old M Clarke to have the * by his name......

The one proviso on Ponting staying until he is 36-38 is if he is winning as Captain. Given that you have alluded that there is more pain for England to come that is highly likely. CA give successful test captains the right to make the call on their careers (Bradman, Benaud, the Chappells, Border, Taylor, & Waugh). So If we're winning like you suggest and he is making runs (like his current forms suggests he should) I can't see Punter pulling* the pin on a seven figure salary in 2012-2013

That next generation team is a ripper REB and virtually the same as mine.

I would have WATSON for SYMONDS except in the subcontinent where SYMONDS
would nearly be the first picked.
I really could not see LEE/TAIT in the same team + would sub them with HILFENHAUS

You made an excellent point about a 5th bowler needed when WARRRRRRNEY retires
as the wokload will increase for the other bowlers.
All your points are immaculately presented as per usual.

And I did notice NostraREBamaus predict Adam VOGES , great call.

Intresting that Vogues is in the squad. I thought he was alot younger than 27 but he is a definate talent. Though i don't think he will get a gig as Symonds bowling is probably slightly better which will be needed on the WACA belter.

I agree with REB next generation team except i think Cameron White will be a definate in the side within three years, he has been in the Cricket Australia system since he was 15 and i think the selectors will be quick to include him, if the 3rd test goes well and the Aussies get up i would'nt be surprised to see him in for the SCG test.
