What the roosters stalwart was referring to was the winning goal in the 1952 Second Semi final. Port were leading by 3 points when McKay threw himself into the ruck. He grabbed the ball from a boundary throw-in in the forward pocket and snapped the winning goal.

In the 1960 Grand Final, Norwood led by 8 points with 10 minutes to go. Malcolm Whitford, Barrie Barbary (the reigning Magarey Medallist) and Barry Potts all then goaled for North to lead by 11 points (North had also added a point in that surge), before John Vickers replied with a kick from almost the centre which bounced through. The last five minutes of the game were played predominantly in the North forward line. Trevor Hughes, later of West Adelaide, had a chance to sew up the game but kicked out of bounds from 40 yards. Norwood were starting to mount an attack when the siren rang. I have an audio copy of the last quarter as called by Tom Warhurst and max Hall. It is great listening for any footy historian.

As another aside the audio ends with Tom Warhurst saying 18 year old Bob Hammond is the best first year full back he has ever seen. Fairly astute comment I would have thought.

I reckon if we had a best ever SANFL team from each club it would translate into a PA V NA Grand Final

Im guessing , Ian Mckay would be in the best ever NA team at full back ?
Bob Hammond 2nd ?

Was talking with a rooster stalwart on Sunday
Apparently Ian Mckay kicked a , or a winning goal in the 1960 Grand Final Vrs Norwood ?????

Absolutely, I can tell you where I stood for the game but I don't remember one kick of the game. But I certainly remember getting home from the game and the celebrations that night at my family home because the roosters had won the premiership. As a postscript my dear old dad, who had won a sizeable sum of money on the roosters, soon after the victory went out and bought a brand new red and white (or white and red) Holden FB station sedan to celebrate the roosters victory. Now that's how to celebrate a premiership and that's what a SANFL premiership used to mean in those days.

Considering North won by 110pts in 1952 I don't think it was the "winning" goal!
