Rd 4 - Sturt v Eagles @ Unley (Sat 17/4)

Postby Big Phil » Mon Apr 12, 2010 5:41 pm

This should be a good game with both sides coming off wins, the Eagles a little patchy over Norwood and Sturt getting their first win of the year, easily over the Tigers...

Might get along to this one, will be interesting to see Sturt for the first time in the flesh this year and I look forward to seeing Scott Welsh in his new Eagles jumper.

Will Arthur the dog make another appearance on the Dog Park or will he let the footballers play ?

This game is on ABC TV, the Double Blues getting 2 home games in a row, but this is the stand alone Saturday game so there was no other option.

Along with Glenelg v Central, this should be one of the games of the round for mine...

Sturt by 5 goals

Even though we have had a few bad games against Sturt in the last couple years, we still have a very good record against them.

I really still have no idea where the Eagles are at. This weekend will begin to give some indication. But as Godden said, it will be some time before his game plan is fully integrated. Would hope that we'll give Sturt a run for their money and stay competitive for the whole game. They are one of the measuring sticks of the competition.

So far I've been impressed with Lewis and Greiger in particular. Greiger especially looks more than capable of holding down full back. He's a good size and most importantly keeps his feet at all times.

With Schulz injured, Salter will almost certainly get called up to the Power.

I'd line up as follows:

F: Redden Welsh Goldsworthy
HF: Cheep Staple Grocke
C: Allmond Powell Symmons
HB: Jarrad Hill McKenzie
B: Rimington Greiger Thompson
R: Miles Broadbent Cicolella
I: Rowntree Treeby Lewis

In: Redden, Allmond
Out: Guilhaus, Salter

Aerie,
Expect Nick Salter to still be available for Eagles - too short for a key AFL forward and not sufficiently elusive for an AFL HF flanker leading to Mark Williams trying him in the backlines in the NAB Cup -sad for Nick but good for the Eagles. Mitch Banner is a more likely return with Robbie Gray and Roden coming into calculations if not this week, then very shortly especislly with Hartlett also building up game time with Westies - and Banner is exactly the type of player we're lacking at present. Give James Stewart another 2 games to get his fitness up and he'll add a bit of bite also.
You chose Redden but he can't hold his ground against the lighter bodies in the Seconds and is still 12 months away. Despite Guilhaus's 2 possessions, he did give a little nuisance value against Norwood which he didn't do against Port and should be retained for this week - yes, we look very vulnerable in the ruck especially since we haven't presently got true good rovers who can rove to losing rucks.
Expect Cheep to be dropped this week. Staple has to get his possessions up for a HF flanker although his 2 goals in round 2 will save him for present; not so for Symmons who is on shaky ground, The brilliance of Salter has glossed over the otherwise glaring weak attack. Hope that Welsh and Grocke won't put in shockers 2 weeks in a row. McKenzie will be better for the run and providing Broadbent isn't taken by the Power, he with Powell, Treeby, Cicca, Jarrad should give us a competitive on -ball group.
Good luck to Greiger in his "moment-of-truth" match on Chambers - has performed well against average opponents so far and this game will be his big test.

I can see why Aerie would put Redden into the side. Not because of Seb's lack of touch .but in 2009 Redden was our best ruckman at unley .
Having said that Seb IMHO stays in the side .His size will cause some problems to some teams .
Staple is listed under BIGPHILS injury list with an ankle problem(will keep an eye open wednesday night).
Dale Symmons needs to go back to the seconds to find some sort of form be it only some in front of goal.
Welsh and Grocke should not be 2 or 3 teamed this week .
But if Salter Welsh grocke all play are we once again to tall in the forward line.and if staple is an out who comes in Matz who played well against port is injured.Lane is not in form IMHO.
Allmond needs to come in some added pace is needed as an on baller.
Cheep seems to be a few peoples whipping boy .didnt anyone esle notice his game in the third term .getting into the packs in Norwoods forward line and stopping Norwood getting the ball.and then giving the ball to our players. That alone should save him he did a job that halted Norwood.

All I know is lucky I don't have to en a selector ;)

Well summed up Premiers. I mentioned the same theme re Banner on the Eagles' fans website. Cheep just doesn't do enough and a half fit Allmond or Stewart would be better value.

Cheep has seemed like all the Eagles fans whipping boy since day one, is this because he came over with such high expectations.

Should be a good game, I think both sides are still settling themselves into the gameplan and style so while Sturt would've got some much needed confidence I'm not going into it over confident. Good thing is at the moment we have few injuries.

I think the only person who had high expectations was the previous coach(not meaning to cause any strife with that comment).Cheep told the club exactly what type of player he was at vfl level.

My comments above were from my view in the grandstand.I saw cheep go into the packs in the third term and stop Norwood taking the ball away.

Cheep is doing ok. The small forward position is just about the most difficult. He has quick and creative hands in close. From watching him this year he definitely adds value to the side. Staple was our most effective forward in the first 3 quarters last week - needs to be given time.

I'm expecting a small crowd for this one. It's in direct competition wit the Cows game v Carlton. Not smart programming really as not only is there alot of Crows supporters who will miss this game but there is a large amount of Sturt supporters who follow Carlton also. I would be one of the rare ones who will still go and see Sturt rather than Carlton.

Well the ABC must cover a game on Sat afternoon. Thems the breaks.

Sturt by 50+ in a high scoring game if weather permits.

We'll all have to keep a lookout for a bloke with his little blanky, having a tea party with his teddybear, allegedly sucking his thumb

I understand that they have to have a game on Saturday arvo but they don't put Magpies games up against Power games do they. Just shows the SANFL don't think outside the Crow, Power box at times and realise that there are as many people in SA that follow the other 14 clubs in the AFL combined as there is that follow the Crows and Power. They still rave on about there being 650,000 Crows supporters and 300,000 Power supporters here. Absolute bollocks.

That's going to be a horrible game to watch, better off getting down to the local oval.
It's all the SANFL's fault.
