Hawthorn Oval is looking a treat. Have had the Sturt CC boys groom it for us over the off-season.

Wont take long for it to turn to sh!t though.

Seaton Oval will be firm as usual, the rain might soften it up a tad.

kilburn v SMOSH - SMOSh by a few, not as many as people think though
Mitcham v Scotch - know nothing about scotch and mitcham havent said to much either.

I watched Para Hills twice last year and saw CBCOC a few times - I dont agree if CBC have their full side - they enjoy the hard game

Exciting 1st round of footy! Any one wanna give us a run down on the PH v CBC game and the Portland v seaton game?

The Hawks managed to hold off a late charge from Scotch just! Was a good, hard game of footy. Inaccurate kicking really cost Hawks, who probably could have put the game away early. One of the more exciting and exhaustive games of footy ive ever been involved in. Scotch had the last play of the day, bombing long to their forward 50's hot spot with only 10 seconds to go, unable to take a grab while Mitcham's defence mopped up and then were happy to hear the siren sound seconds later! No one knows much about Scotch, but they were a pretty young outfit who are only going to improve, and shouldn't be taken lightly. It was really good to see Mitcham's recruits perform!

The Seaton-Portland game was ruined by consistant over-umpiring saturday.
Going into the game knowing the history between the 2 clubs i think everyone was looking forward to a very physical affair.
The umpires from the start set a foundation thats going to frustrate the sh!t out of players & cause players to react verbally towards them.
A couple of incidents which resulted in yellow & red cards are part & parcel of todays game.
No.1 Two opposing players showing they won't be intimidated were wrestling after a fair hip & shoulder, one player (Seaton one at that) was jumped upon by a number of Portland players, the end result a red card to the Seaton player & no free kick to the opposition!
What was so wrong that didn't warrant a free kick but warranted a red card? ( no punches thrown but umpires report stated numerous punches were thrown).Seaton ends up with 17 men for 15 mins.
No.2 Two players again showing strength chest to chest at each other that resulted in both players yellow carded & sent from the field. ( a complete over-reaction again )
It will be very interesting to see the report from the 2 umpiring observers at the game thats handed in to the Amateur League.
A video footage was used by the observers & will show the numerous over-reacted whistle blowing decisions that continue to frustrate the hell out of players, coaches & supporters, its time they stopped bringing attention to themselves for the wrong reasons & umpire to the book.
On a better note it was great to see so many people at the game, it was the biggest crowd the club has had in years.
I must say those Portland supporters can drink!

Agree 100% with the umpires NM. Some baffling decisions both ways - i can recall looking across to you guys NM on a few occasions, and you were as puzzled as us on what was going on.
It was a physical game, especially early. Seaton were definately cleaner with their skills, and had the better of us at most stoppages. Losing our CHF for the whole game just before halftime (because of his own stupidity  ) didnt help our cause either. Wanders was easily the best player on the ground, Coardy was also good off half back and that geriatric Marshall can still get a bit of it too ! His treatment of Portland's runner needs to be seriously looked at though ;)
I thought Laslett was very good for us, as was Birdy. Perkins battled his bum off all day too.
Not a disastrous start for us, but still showed we need to improve in a few areas. I think we have the basics of a reasonable side though. As for Seaton, they look strong, good mix of older blokes and a few kids. Its early days i know, but would think they will be around the mark.
Crowd was good too, plenty of good natured sledging and banter going on. And a fair few cans being consumed as well ! Look forward to the return bout in round 10 at the Thunderdome !

I heard via a B-Grader from Iggies that he was carded and hence sat out the rest of the game!?

I think Seaton may need to install an elevator or lift after watching Hosie trying to climb the ladder to their elevated coaches box. Bloody funny

The serial pest runner needs to have a good hard look at himself!! Agree with the comments stated a really hard physical contest marred by some very over umpired decisions. Going to have that problem when two young guys who have been umpiring SANFL Under 18's come and umpire Amateur league games. Lot more contested footy that these umpires need adapt to, perhaps the powers at be need to let them know this. Great to see lots of Portland people hang around for a beer and a chat after the game.
