No Alcohol at an SANFL match

Postby Sojourner » Thu Apr 08, 2010 12:02 am

Without dragging the Good Friday Football topic off track I wanted to put up for discussion what people think of having an SANFL match that is Alcohol free as would be the case on any match played on Good Friday due to the restrictions on the sale of alcohol on the day by the Federal Government.

Would you still go to the football if there was no alcohol available at the ground nor were you permitted to bring in containers? Will not having alcohol available at the match have an effect either up or down on the crowd numbers in your opinion?

Thoughts?

I like a beer when I'm at any sort of sporting event. In moderation it adds to the enjoyment of the occasion etc but if there was a reason why they couldn't serve alcohol such as your apparently bizarre uber-Catholic laws then it wouldn't bother me.
I think anyone who can't go for a couple of hours without alcohol has a serious problem.

depends when the couple of hours is- if it's at work, it's a problem, at a party/footy, unrealistic.

I think it's stupid but I'd still go. Perhaps I'd use it as a practice session for my "Dry in July" experience.

If any ground besides Norwood was made alcohol free it wouldn't make any difference to me.
It would stop a lot of my mates going and then in turn I probably would stop going too though.
Easy enough to sneak in anyway as Weslo have little idea, the only thing of note I noticed them do last weekend was three fat bastards stand in the way of some women and kids who had been sitting in the spot for at least an hour.
At the end of the day it's about choice and I you took that choice away from people they'd be more likely to go to the AFL or their local pub so it's a ridiculuos concept as the SANFL aren't exactly turning people away from the gate.
I want more facillities and choices at SANFL games, not less.

Wouldnt be a problem for me, but will turn people away, and clubs would not want to relinquish the revenue.

Wouldn't bother me too much for one game. I'm there for the footy more so than a drink anyways.

Sturt did it in 1998 because they couldn't get a liquor licence for inside the ground and the first game was a sellout.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I don't like the idea of watching North sober.

Depends if patrons knew that no alcohol was available before the game and I'm assuming you mean 1st game back at Unley. Probably would have sold out regardless. Try it this week and the 5,000 crowd figure will not be reached.

Probably would attract under 500 less IMO, but the revenue from alcohol sales will be missed more by the host club.

I'll nominate two games to be trialled next year. South v North at Noarlunga, and Centrals v North at Elizabeth. Happily miss those games.

I'd still go regardless.

But would any club want to host a Good Friday game knowing that they'll miss out on a stack of beer revenue? Doubt it.

I know if I was in charge of an SANFL club, I'd flat out refuse to hold a Good Friday game purely for financial reasons.

You would think a club would only host a match on Good Friday if it could sell alcohol.

And that's why it won't happen.

I don't think Australia will allow alcohol sales on Good Friday in our lifetimes.

I'm still interested to know what happens in the Eastern states that have Good Friday NRL matches. I'd forego alcohol for one day if it meant we had Good Friday matches.

They'd be dry games as it's a federal offence to sell alcohol on Good Friday
