Club Doctors

It surprised me on Saturday that West Adelaide did not have a Club Doctor present to help a Gentleman that was in need of medical help during the late stages of the Reserves game. The Glenelg Doctor went and assisted until St. Johns people got accross the ground.

So are Glenelg one of the few teams to have a Club Doctor present at all Home and Away League/Reserves games? Or is it West that are the odd ones out by not having a Doctor present?

I would have thought at worst it was the resposibility of the Home Team to have a Doctor present for ALL matches. This is how it is done in the WNBL that the Home Club has a doctor present at all games to deal with any needs as required for both teams.

Just interested to see how it works in the SANFL.

The club doctors usually help each other's team out when there is only one present.

It's also extremely difficult for some clubs to gain the services of a doctor on a regular basis.

West's doctor was definitely there for the majority of the day.

I was only about 10 rows back from where the elderly gentleman was having some difficulties and required the assistance of a doctor. Someone sitting up there behind the gentleman in question stood up and looked straight down toward the Bays interchange bench as it was only 15 metres directly in fronty of them.

The Glenelg doctor did come up to the stands as mentioned, until the St. John crew arrived to take over the situation. I think the gentleman in question was actually a Bays supporter and I could be mistaken, but one person next to the gentleman who was assisting him looked like Becchara Palmer, the partner of Bays player Daniel Kirk, so it could possible have been a relative.

Does anyone know or have an update on how the gentleman is ?

This is how it works in WA as well. Our club doctor doesn't usually attend away games.

If a member of the the public is in trouble, then the trainers are also qualified to assist until a paramedic can attend.

This statement is unusual though:

Doctors aren't always on hand when someone in a public place falls ill.

Just to clarify my post I was in no way concerned that the West Doctor was not attending to the Gentleman in the Grandstand.

I just thought it strange that the home club did not appear to have a Doctor at the Reserves game. However as Big Phil pointed out maybe the Gentleman or people assisting him had ties to Glenelg do they approached the Glenelg bench.

I have no problem with the situation as the St. Johns people attended and I wouldn't have thought club doctors would have to deal with spectators.

I really just wanted to find out how other SANFL clubs work to see if Glenelg are lucky to have a Doctor that makes himself avaialble for ALL League & Reserves games.

Certainly lucky if you have a doctor that makes themselves available to your club.

These guys have busy lives and lets face it if they wanted to they could go to work and make a lot more money than go and help a sanfl club.

Central are fortunate to have a few who perform club duties on a rotational basis......the one I stood with during the recent home game against the Magpies was advised by a Port supporter to get a job

To be fair, his view may have been in the minority as the other 30 Port faithful didn't offer an opinion.....
