We won but should not really be too excited about it.

First quarter was great but the rest of the match I thought belonged to Port.

It it clear we are going to be totally dependent on Crows/Power players to fill the gaps in our side which are many. Of the new faces I thought Lewis performed the best.

The usual guys were our best - Grocke, Cicca, Powell, Jarrad etc. Miles also played a vital role in the ruck (this guy may just be our best recruit of the last 2 years with his versatility

Goldsworthy was good when playing in the midfield but lost influence when moved down back after half time. Thompson will be a solid player.

On th downside.....

Both Hoban and Guilhas were useless as our rucking combo. Biggest guys on the ground yet couldn't win the hit outs or even get a possession. Both were benched for most of the last half and we relied on Miles who did a great job.

Similarly Cheep and Hicks both demonstrated once again they are simply not up to it. The coaching staff will be held accountable if these guys do not improve as the perceived belief that these guys will get better was one of the reasons we didn't recruit the speedy midfielder the club just had to get in the offseason.

Eagles started like they would have a huge win .Port made so many skill errors it wasn't funny.
Second Quarter Eagles went off to sleep like in other years. But they didnt totally give up .Worked their way back into the game with the likes of Cica Powell Treeby Salter all performing well.the key moves IMHO 3rd quarter Miles into the Ruck and Hill into defence.
Hoban is not ready for League just yet .
Hicks and Rowntree might be ditto .
Staple once the Bald guy was moved up to Ports Forward line perfromed better.
AFL guys Knights and Broadbent needed the game time .
Seconds played the new game style well.Rimmington was one of the best.
Our Port AFL players in Redden and Dawson performed well in the two's .Best not to say much about Jacky he was not up to our seconds standard today.

A win is a win but the Eagles needed the game time after only 2 trial games.
And a special mention to the new Eagle girls looked great looked professional .and i know who else they dance for ;)

GOALS - Eagles: Salter 7, Staple, Cicolella 2, Treeby, Cheep, Grocke, Knights, Symmons, Goldsworthy. Port: Mercer 3, Clayton, Summerton 2, McInerney, Kirkwood, Carey, Dolling, Slattery, Rose, Erskine.
CROWD 3113 at Woodville Oval

WOODVILLE-West Torrens showed the value of experience in its fighting 23-point win against Port Adelaide today.

Nick Salter booted seven goals but it was the `old brigade' led by Justin Cicolella and Luke Powell who answered every Magpie challenge in the win, 17.13 (115) to 14.8 (92).

The result handed Michael Godden a victory on his league coaching debut and left Port Adelaide's Tony Bamford to rue a missed opportunity at Woodville Oval.

Making matters worse for Port Adelaide was a hamstring injury to skipper James Meiklejohn who left the ground after quarter time.

`'Something we worked really hard on during pre-season was those critical times and that's something they have to take control of, there's nothing I can do from up there,'' Godden said.

`'And the whole group stepped up when it had to step up.''

The hand-ball happy Magpies (205 handballs to the Eagles' 135) threatened to hijack the game with consecutive goals to start the third term but the experience of the Eagles was telling.

Grocke got the first goal of the final quarter and when Lee Staple and Salter followed soon after, it was game over.

To Port's credit, it refused to be blown away and rallied with three late goals but the damage was done.''I thought the last quarter we made some poor decisions,'' Bamford said.

''And our senior players were culprits in that area as much as the junior players.''

I honestly thought that Williams umpired fairly well - it was one of the other two in particular that seemed to over umpire the game.

I'm happy with the win - I wasn't sure how we were going to go after the bye in the first round and also the bye in the second-to-last week of trials. Definitely room for improvement but there were also some good signs with the new game plan.

BEST - Eagles: Cicolella, Powell, Salter, Jarrad, Treeby, Knights, Lewis.

How the hell did Knights make the best players???
Who writes this trash???

As for 'flash' - serviceable, but 4th best??? - I must've been watching a different game.

Grocke was a 'target all day - did alot of 'hard things' too & alot of running - something he appears to have developed in his game.

No mention of Goldsmith (No. 29 for those uninnitiated) - fantastic game.

Obviously, these were done 'from the couch' :?

CD - what were club 'awards'?

I know I said I wouldn't quote again on SA Footy but here I am doing it again.
Club awards were posted on the Eagles Forum under game review LEH.
Sorry to say you didn't get a mention for passing the hat in the grand stand .a very nice touch and kept the Eagles fans amused ;)
Cd may be suffering from a virus this morning he was at the presidents lunch ;)
And the old players were watching from the stands Passador Dobber and Westbrook. Not to mention the PUP was also there.

Day plays like Grocke and did well in the seconds .Watchout Grocke if you have an off game!! May well go up if Salter plays for the Power.
Seb started ok and fell out late in the game .Will be better as a second ruck when Parry returns or in fact starts.
Scott Lewis has come on in leaps and bounds since the first Eagles internal trial .And for mine I can not see why he never played league at the other 2 clubs. He can be an outrider perhaps thats a reason.

Did you watch the game? Quiet first half but he was a huge factor in the Eagles win, he helped wrestle back control of the game in the 3rd quarter. Maybe you missed a ton of his quick handballs to release the runners? He had 22 possessions, at least 15 of those in the second half IMO. Really damaging in the centre in 3rd/4th quarters.
