Is Adelaide the boring test?

Postby whufc » Sat Dec 02, 2006 12:39 am

I know ill probably get caned for this, but today was the first time due to the sell out that i have been able to watch the whole day live on television of an Adelaide Test.

I don't know if it was just me but the game didn't feel like it had the same buzz as it feels watching the test at the SCG, MCG or Gabba, it almost bordered on boring.

At the ground the atmosphere is second to none in Australia but on television it the game, crowd, commentary all felt very flat

Any thoughts.

I went to Perth last year, the atmosphere was the same as Adelaide. The reason? Similar crowds, wide open spaces for people to sit. A much more relaxed atmosphere. The MCG is a stadium, surrounded by stands and creating a more intense atmosphere.

Personally, I'd rather watch cricket at Adelaide Oval than any other arena in the World. If you find watchng cricket at Adelaide Oval boring, then you're not really all that keen on cricket to be honest.

Agreed. Best place to spend a day at the cricket. The best part about Adelaide is the fact that you can take people who don't even like cricket and they will have a great time.

Having said that because of the layout of the ground it wouldn't have the same intensity for television viewers that a stadium such as the MCG has. I know where i'd prefer to go though.

It seemed boring coz it was! 266 runs on the first day at Adelaide! Are the poms the first side ever to play for the draw from the first ball? I think that they are planning to (only because they won the toss & batted first, luckily for them) bat as long as they can & get some batting practise & not care if the match becomes a draw. Then they are only 1 down with 3 tests left. Easier to draw the series with less matches to play.

The fact that England are not getting out for small scores doesn't help.

Test are about preparing the right wickets, unfortunately Adel Oval wickets are too flat and are too heavily in the batting side favour

got to give a little bit of encouragement to the bowlers

As its already been stated the wicket is pretty flat. Not boring just too one sided for the batsmen.

The Poms are a boring team. On a flat track they take almost 6 sessions to score 550, at just over 3 an over. They should have that score just after lunch on day two. The ball was hardly swinging, not doing much off the seam, Lee and McGrath were bowling pies, Warne struggled, Clark was ok, Clarke just filled in time. If the Poms cant go at over 4.5 runs an over in those conditions, they never will. Even before they declared they were still defending. How about going for the smack to score some runs? I know Flintoffs batting form is shite at the minute, but still, they can be more aggresive.

Hahaha!!! Nice one Mal. Well, all I can say is sometimes we have other things in our lives that mean we can't always get to the cricket. I'm just fortunate they showed it all day on free to air TV. Believe me, if I could have been there, I would have.

This has been an ongoing criticism of Adelaide for as many years as I can recall ... and yet somebody usually wins the Test. We've had some of the most exciting finishes in Australian Test Cricket at Adelaide Oval. Yes, for the first 2-3 days the wicket is usually a road, but by days 4 and 5, it begins to wear and take spin. Unlike a lot of wickets, there's also something in it for the quick men of the final 2 days which is unusual by Australian standards.

Yes, this Test has been dominated by the batsmen, but that is because batting is what both sides do best.

The Poms have come to Adelaide with a deffinate plan to not lose this Test match. Perhaps at the expence of winning it. They way they batted yesterday, the fact they didn't pick Monty (again) and to not open the bowling with wayward Harmison last night all tells you that they want this test to go the distance. It works out well for the SACA and the ACB, more $$$$.
Just hope there is the chance of a result going into day 5. Nothing worse than a test match last day with nothing to play for.

Don't worry. They're definitely not losing it, I can promise you that. I'll be interested to see if they enforce the follow on.

Sorry i must of not explained myself to well, what i meant to say was that the telecast of the game was boring and i don't know how channel 9's crowd mics are set-up but watching it on television it just seems very boring where every moment of the melbourne test feels special.

I have been to watch test match cricket at the Gabba, MCG, SCG and WACA and Adelaide is 350% percent a better venue than all of them to watch cricket no matter how the game is going, so im not bagging the groung just the way it comes across on tv

I would suggest it was far from a boring test, most Adelaide Oval tests tend to be the better one's going the full 5 days and often to the last session.

it turned out to be an absolute cracker

A lot of people, mainly channel 9 commentators critisied the pitch for being to batter friendly but when they interviewed Les Burdett early in the test he said, he creates a pitch in the attempet to get a result in the last session of the 5th day. Well Done for another great test match wicket.

Yeah he says that every year and normally he's right but lets face it, if the Poms didn't declare in the first there wouldn't have been a result.
