How can we get rid of the bye?

Postby Mopar Dog » Tue Mar 30, 2010 4:36 pm

Season gets started. Round one gets of to a flying start with great crowds and good results for some, others not so good.Along comes round two on a long weekend. Low and behold no Doggies game to watch. The bye is a pain in the arse. How do we get rid of the bloody thing?

The bye early on is a pain in the arse, but for the players, coaches, supporters the bye is extremely useful.
Alot of the players love the bye weekend, gives them a chance to go out, a chance to return home to see the family and simply, a week to recover.
The bye IMO is a good thing, but it is a pain in the arse at the start of the year!

I'd rather the bye in round 2 than round 22 or 23.

How to get rid of it? Wait until 2011.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

It's no big deal, stop whining.

I think it's even worse if your side has the bye in the first round. You go through a long summer and pre-season and then have to watch every other side play in round 1 whilst you have a bye. Now that sucks. :( :( :(

I know but it's better getting the byes out of the way early (particularly this year when we have a split round as well), hence the popular notion that the last year's lower ranked sides get the late byes (which is what's happening this year).

Eagles fans are going to enjoy the split round then in August when they have the bye, no footy for your mob for three weeks.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I used to consider having the bye in Round 1 a real disadvantage putting that club a week behind others in development.
Having said that, I wish that North had the bye last week now!

Care to name them?

I can't think of any comp's that have enforced byes because of an uneven amount of teams.

It might not be due to an uneven amount of teams but I know that teams in the EPL and NFL have weeks off.
I think college football might too.
The NRL did prior to the Gold Coast entering.
The AFL has had many times and will again when the Gold Coast enter.
The Super 14s has in the past and will again soon when Melbourne come in possibly (not sure if there's more teams planned).

I agree its not ideal, I hate it but its not exactly unique.
I really do miss the fluidity that we used to have prior to 1991.

Super 14s will be moving to Super 15s i believe Wedgie. No more teams beside Melbourne coming in IIRC

I am aware of the ones named. Just can't think of any due to uneven amount of teams.
