Took a mate and his two young kids who are over from the USA to the game last night.

They loved it. The five year old boy was transfixed on the game and especially to be able to go on the ground at the breaks and kick the footy around with his sister, an Eagles footy of course.

Mate said that if this was in the states,he would have had to sign a heap of waivers in case of injury from flying footballs, something I had trouble comprehending.

Onto the game. Thought the lights were good only trouble I had was when the ball was on the far side and seeing West players due to their black jumpers.

West dominated the clearances and were in 4th gear all night.

Lobbe dominated the rucks and the followers just run a muck.

North very very disappointing for their supporters, got a total bath.

North should apologise to West because North's ineptness masked to some extent what was a really dominant display by West and thank god they didn't kick straight.

Stats are interesting - the champion data stats are obviously used by the 'Tiser and despite the journo crediting Ryswyk with one goal in his write up, the goal kickers list shows him with 0-1 and I'm sure he kicked 2 (even allowing for my bundified state!).

Well done West the whole night (catering, atmosphere etc) was enjoyable except for the fact I had to watch North serve up one of the softest uninterested looking displays for many a year although lots of credit has to go to West for the pressure and effort they gave and didn't even let North in - not that we looked interested in even having a dip!

West to make the 5 on that performance and North will miss out - STILL too many mentally soft (and some physically too) front runners in R&W aand FFS how is it that since 2004 we still don't know how to hold a tackle!

Definetely 6000 - Sometimes in the past when we have had 1500 people at the ground you would swear there is only 5 or 600. Like previous posters have said, the ground does have wide terraces and I thought at first glance we may have got closer to 7000 using past Richmond crowds as a guage. The outer had a lot more spectators than usual which was a good tell-tale sign. The Past Players Bar and Mound Bar were packed. The car-park was full by 6.30 (I often can get a park after the start of the league game). Champion Data has got it wrong.

With Ports 6000+ members and CDFC's strong following, I hope Elizabeth Oval will get a crowd 6000+ too. Would be great to see Rd 1 breaking somew attendance records > Perhaps some of the so called high profile media outlets may take more notice of our comp rather than their narrow vision of AFL only. (Thats my bandwagon comment for the week)

Well done Westies :D
I think Andy Collins almost let the cat out of the bag last week .As Westies flooded for 3 quarters of the trial and then almost got back in the game by attacking.
Thats 1 pick I didnt get

Could I respectfully suggest that better players that do not do the 1 %ers aren't actually better players
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I agree with you, TSG, but as West fans have had to put up with this 'flooding'' nonsense so often, you should allow us a bit of joy about it in return :)

All credit to West. It is amazing how different a game plan looks when your team wins the ball first isn't it.

How much of West's performance would you put down to "emotion" redandblack? Being first night game, fire, rd 1. Being a knowledgeable football supporter, do you think there could be a "let down"?

Yes, there's always that danger, mate.

I think, though, that the result was a combination of the occasion and also the evolution of Andy Collin's game plan.

I also think our skills have improved a lot and the other factor is our selective recruiting.

Jarrod Silvester is a class full-back and Ryan Ferguson is a star, which gives two strong key defenders. Adam Hartlett gives us another flexible tall player.

The main factor, though, was our attack on the footy.

North are a far better side than they showed and will be too skilful for most teams and it's only Round 1.

I concur. West have improved. Too much for my liking.

Unfortunately, North will play an angry Sturt this week, then it's off to Alberton for Port's first home game for the year, which will be another "emotional" game. North could easily be 0-3.

Good point there TSG but you could also be 1-2 or 2-1 depends on how you all play
